Project Sandstorm. 1971 Blazer 4wd, Boosted carb'd 454 sand beast
I picked this up over the weekend. I had some questions before i started a build thread and tore into this thing. The rust is pretty minimal.
-It has a 454 with a 4speed hooked to it. Plans are a boosted, carb'd 454 with auto th400. 35s with bead locks. Res. shocks. Should be fun in the sand. Thats about it for now. WHen i built project karma i really wanted it to be a blazer but i just wasnt patient enough when i started. I will post more pics and start a build thread soon. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps9rfzwxig.jpg |
Re: Started a new project. 1970 Blazer.
Post pictures of where the manifolds are hitting. It's hard to give a response without seeing what is actually going on there.
Post picture of the transfer case. The stock t-case would be a NP205. There is a badge on it if you can find it. No on the suburban. As far as I know/read/seen, they do not match up. |

Suburban hatch won't work - here's a K5 hatch in WA that will: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=676046
Good luck with your build! |

Re: Started a new project. 1970 Blazer.
Transfer case is a np205.
Transmission is either a muncie sm420, muncie sm 465 or a NP435. It has granny low, and a 6 bolt side cover. Hmmm. |

Looks like a SM465 and an NP205 to me. Since yours is a 70 I think there should be a build tag on the TC attached to driver's side inspection plate (assuming it's original).

But i am having difficulties identifying the trans.. It has a L, then 3 more speeds.. Any other identifiers to pinpoint what trans it is? Also, what fluids does the np205 take? |

Big Block mounts should give you the exhaust clearance you need. I think the rear dump "passenger" log style manifolds were standard issue on the early BB trucks.

I will dig a bit deeper. |
Re: Started a new project. 1970 Blazer.
Iron canine nailed it, Its a 465 since it has the reinforcing ribs built into the case, 435 have a smooth casting ,and a 420 has a bulge on the pass side. My '70 has it also, but with a Dana 20 TC.

Re: Started a new project. 1970 Blazer.
Figured i would give an update. I didnt realize i didnt update at all.
I planned on going 2wd and changed my mind. I just got off the phone with ORD placing a $3200 order with custom leafs and res. shocks. I lucked out and picked up a very straight second frame that i can build from. I also found a set of 3/4 ton axles i will be running.. i only plan on running this in the sand and some very rare mud, no rock action. here are some random pics. I started with the usual floor boards the rocker boxes look good. I peeled the rocker back and it was FULL to the top with mud and crap. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps1kjp9b2q.jpg Opened up. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pssa4pixtj.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pssa4pixtj.jpg Just refitting everything. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psitr1v3hu.jpg |
Re: Started a new project. 1970 Blazer.
I blasted the rocker boxes, then painted it sealed it all up.

I was going to just weld it in but i was advised to bolt it in. So i plated the underside and bolted it in. Solid as a rock. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pscan4ozwu.jpg |
Re: Started a new project. 1970 Blazer.
This is just some of the junk the PO did.
This is how he spaced the transfer case. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps5cbcy7yv.jpg They used street signs and about 40 screws to cover the shifter holes. what a mess. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psws9mezw6.jpg Seat bracket http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pse1jmyhfy.jpg Little rust in the cowl area. Shaving the firewall a bit. I like that clean look. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pswf0zwdy2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psyhjk6ruo.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps4udbusag.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psqfnevfre.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pswf0zwdy2.jpg |
Re: Started a new project. 1970 Blazer.
Currently im working on the second frame and i purchased a bronco bob roll cage that i will be installing soon. I currently installed a built new th400, new axles, new radiator, and rewired the vehicle. I plan on saving the tub for last. I want to get it functioning. I do have a little video of me driving it the other day.
New frame.. SUPER straight. Hitch on the rear is already gone. Just getting it bare to send to the blasters and powder coat. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psufmj9r8p.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psco7kecdx.jpg Hitch is finally gone. That was welded in so badly. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pslqn3a3qr.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps1cjue6bz.jpg These are a rim im thinking of running. 35s with a 15x10. SHould look pretty beefy. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pssjq5syvh.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pslnoockja.jpg Here is a vid of its first test drive after the new transfer case, transmission and new wiring job.I tried to embed the video in the post so you didnt have to click a link, i dont know how to do that. First run with new transmission/shifter/open header. |
Re: Started a new project. 1970 Blazer.
IM getting ready to send the frame out for sand blasting and powdercoating. Anything i should do before i send it out? I was thinking of having it dipped instead of sand blasted. I feel like sand blasting will not get in between the brackets that are riveted on. Any recommendations?
