'70 c10

I finally got a '70 c10 like my grandpa had and its what i learned to drive a 3speed in. I've looked at plenty here and the deals either never worked out or the trucks "NOT FOR SALE" as it rots into the ground.. but i found this one on craigslist being sold by a guy that had too many toys and no money left.

http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i1.../Photo0005.jpg
it was full of junk but ran great and pulled hard. the guy claimed that the guy before him rattle caned primer all over the truck and its coming off in flakes.

the primer junk comes off pretty easy with red scotchbrite and some elbow grease. it got cold dark and started raining again so i had to stop.

tomorrow ill figure out why there isnt any brake lights and the gas gauge reads pegged at full. its going to be my daily driver starting monday. not bad for a grand

after i get the little stuff fixed and scrub the inside down (smells like mouse pee or something) i might look into doing a step side box. fix it up a little at a time

I've never seen mouse pee to know what it would smell like, you must feel like a lucky guy. For the money spent you got a good lookin score

Re: '70 c10

thanks, its got 350/350 in it which purrs down the road. i put a few hours into wet sanding the spray paint off it today, my arms are tired but it was worth it to me.

i ran out of sand paper on the front of the hood and need to pull the emblem off to get the rst of the spray paint off it.

i was looking on craigs list for parts and found a month old ad for doors without trim which i want but he only had the passenger door left and its in a lot better shape than mine thats rusted pretty good around and behind the trim. picked it up for 60 bucks from a guy in town that had 2 '72s and some more parts.

Re: '70 c10

well i got the gas gauge working again. a broken wire off the fuse block and the wire was coiled up under the seat... and found there was a missing fuse on the fuse block and it looked like it said tail or stop? but i put a fuse in it to see if my brake lights would work now but i wont know until its darker or until i get some one outside with me at the same time

Re: '70 c10

found the brake light harness in the cab was disconnected and caught under the gas tank. i had to pull the seat out to fish it out and to feed the seat belts back thru the seat. After i got the harness pluged back in still didnt have brake lights so i unplugged the brake light switch and jumped it with wire and the lights worked! 6 bucks later and a trip to autozone for the new switch i have brake lights and new wipers, now its ready to be my daily driver for the summer.. until i take it apart more

Lovely truck DSC, I also am in the process of getting a 70 C10, although yours looks like a long bed.

Ds86C10 04-29-2012 11:23 PM

Re: '70 c10

thanks, yup its a long for now, the bed is pretty tore up so it might get chopped into a short box or maybe a stepside

Re: '70 c10

i think the motor is on the way out... it wouldnt start the other day and looking under the hood with the air cleaner off, its pretty clear the previous owner was more of a hacker than i thought... cables and linkage to the carb, held on with zip ties... spark plug wires, some melted on the manifolds and also zip tied together. very leaky valve cover gaskets. tranny inspection cover, missing. cant quite tell for sure but the rear main oil seal looks to be leaking but may just be form the valve cover leaks. heater core looped off, so hose from water pump goes right to the intake, zip tied to the fuel filter...
and the best part of all for some reason i touched the distributor. and it turned very easily.

so the timing is all jacked up now before it ran like crap but still had good power but felt like it could use a good tune up... yes yes it needs it badly. But i got it to start and turned the distributor a little and now from a cold start it pops right off and dosent die when you go to leave, before 2 pumps and it would start and run crappy and stall. NOW when you get on it more than half throttle it sounds like valve train noise, like ****ing marbles on the valves and leaves a good cloud if you hammer from a stop. Before it didnt make any weird noise at wide open throttle.

hopefully ill be able to replace all the bad ignition stuff this weekend and throw a timing light on it and attempt to fix it and see if the noise and crap goes away, even though i know it smokes from the drivers side bank of the motor at idle once its hot but it doesnt always do it..

OH and when it wouldnt start. the starter would engage the fly wheel but wouldnt spin it, like the motor was locked up... i could keep trying to start and then it would turn over and start.. fml

Re: '70 c10

found a cheap parts truck on craigslist over the weekend but had to wait 3 days for the guy to get back in town. ill pick it up tomorrow but just put money down on it. its all there except for the box and the heads to the engine because the guy has a set of rebuilt vortec heads but wants 400 bucks just for those and im not made of money. since the frame in back was modified for a flat bed and its 4wd, im stripping it of all the usefull parts that i need and that my buddy needs. the rest will go up forsale.

followed the parts truck being towed down the road, last time itll see the open road. THe truck was in the previous owners family for a long time and he had dreams of fixing it up but never happened after he pulled the heads off it 4 years ago. its now sitting in my parents drive way waiting to be taken a part and the pieces used on a few other trucks

nice pick on both trucks will be watching

Re: '70 c10

started on it yesterday with it being 100 degrees out. the parts truck was more rotted than i thought. passenger fender is junk and the drivers door is rotted out on the bottom and comes up past the bottom hinge. it did come with a brand new brake booster and master cylinder tho.

both of the trucks together
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i1...8/IMAG0023.jpg

at my first stopping point to go cool off
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i1...8/IMAG0025.jpg

where i got by the end of the day and started to light off fireworks
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i1...8/IMAG0026.jpg

still need to sway wheels and tires around, pull the headers and the new exhaust, and the radiator. then ill have to start swaping the parts onto my yellow '70.

Re: '70 c10

just been enjoying using my truck lately. i dragged home a boat the other day, it was the first time i towed anything with my truck and it acted like nothing was back there.
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i1...95787190_n.jpg

work on the truck is taking a week or so off so i can finish putting disc brakes and drop spindles in my '57 so i can spend next weekend at car craft with it.

Re: '70 c10

a week ago i left my parents house to go work on my '57 but on my way there i heard a metal scraping sound from the motor, i parked my truck and went to restart it and the starter would spin freely not touching the flywheel... so it sat there for a week because i got the '57 together for carcraft. it was the first time since last october that i drove my car.
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i1...nnie98/001.jpg

got back to the truck today, i checked the starter because i thought it was a stuck and just needed a good whack. i touched it and the starter swung to the side a bit. one bolt was loose and i thought the other was just gone. I found the bolt still in it was too long and was tight but the starter wasnt. i dropped the starter down and saw a broken off bolt... ill be trying to get out the broken bolt tomorrow now that the truck is back at my parents house instead of in the street in front of my girlfriends moms.

Re: '70 c10

oh and today while loading up my tools, the neighbors friend asked if i wanted to sell my truck or trade it for a "mint" older goldwing. i declined the offer

Re: '70 c10

drilled and extracted the broken off starter bolt, went way easier than i thought it was going to. after it was out i cleaned up the starter and all the wire connections and put the starter back in and fired the truck up.
