best 'back to black' type product?
 

I have a 2003 Yukon and the factory black plastic running boards are naturally faded at this point. I spray them with tire shine or use Mother's back to black on them occasionally but the results are temporary and they make them too slick - my wife actually uses them. Is there a product that will restore the finish and last a while without making them slippery?

The Mother's Back to Black is way too oily and runs down the side of your vehicle when it rains. I found that the product from Wizards Products (Black Renew) if far superior to the Mother's stuff. I use it mostly on the fender flares and steps on my Daily "Bubba Beater" 4 wheel drive work truck. Easy to apply and works great.

There's a product called "showroom new" that I use on black plastic parts and rubber.

It's a black dye, so there is no peeling or flaking. It soaks into the plastic for a deep black look. A little goes a long way. Be sure to use rubber gloves when applying it, or you will have dark fingers for several days.

Another consideration. Black Rit dye. You can pick it up at Walmart or any craft type store. It's for clothes, but I've used it on faded black plastic.

One other product you might be interested in. Black Wow Exterior Trim Restorer.

I love this product. It's some type of oil and a little goes a long way. It brings out the original color in a lot of plastic/rubber trim pieces. I can't say I use it regularly, as all the plastic pieces I've used it on, I've not had to recoat since.

Thanks guys. I ordered a bottle of Black Renew from Wizard Products but haven't tried it yet. I had to fix a bunch of AC stuff on that truck and have not gotten around to cleaning it up good. I'll report back when I get a chance to use it.

Good Morning, I personally have not tried this but saw an YouTube video on it. The guy used peanut butter (non-crunchy). the results look very good on the video.

I used the Black Renew piecesparts linked and it does last a whole lot longer than the Mothers product. I put some on the running boards a little over a month ago and it still looks pretty good. But I am going to try the dye BruthaMan recommended next time, hopefully it will be more permanent.

Some people probably frown upon this, but I used a heat gun on my Jeep Wrangler's fender flares. Worked very well, not sure how long it will last though because I sold it soon after, but still looked great.

This is by far the best product I have ever used.
I had an 8 year old Avalanche and the sails were terrible. I used this and it made them like new again. I also use it for black running boards, mirrors etc.

It is fairly expensive, but I am still using the original can i bought 4 years ago.

I tried Mothers "Back to Black" and found it to be greasy and it left more residue than I wanted. I now use Wizards Products "black Renew". It does an excellent job and is not greasy by any means.

Initially I was a little put off by the price, but it lasts so much longer it is a better value.

If you have a large investment sitting in your garage, don't scrimp on what it takes to keep it worth it's true value.
