67-72 boatside pics
I've been trying to do some research on boatsiding my next rig but I can't find any pics for a reference. Anybody ever seen or done boatsides on a 67-72 chevy?

Boat side  The silly terminology you boys keep coming up with. I guess I did know what you were talking about...I think?

Boatside is where you cut out the rocker, much like the truck K pictured, frame it out in tubing, then use a thick flat plate, at an angle to make a shape similar to a boat's hull. Providing more clearance and a surface to slide across the rocks without getting hung up like on traditional rock sliders. Sometimes (usually if you're going that far anyway) it will continue far up into the door, for even more clearance, and funny tiny little doors. Not a 67-72, but this is one of ORD's trucks for example. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f4...UA08--079a.jpg |
Re: 67-72 boatside pics
I've been searching on Pirate before I asked it here. I have gotten a few responses on there with a couple that look like what I'm planning on doing. That green rig above looks good. Thats my plan with my 71 c10. Bobbed, dovetailed, pinched nose ( not as much as his), and boatsides, 203-205 doubler, th400, tbi350, locked with full hydro steering, 1 tons, 44" tsl's, 4 link with coils in the rear, and sticking with the leafs up front for now. I'm taking all the parts off my jeep in order to build this pickup so I need the extra clearance everywhere so I can go on the same trails as I did with the little jeep. I just needed more room and not to mention chevy body looks sooooo much better.

Here's where I'm at so far on the tear down.
http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...epteardown.jpg As of last night. Should have this frame stripped tonight and ready to pull the 71 in and start tearing it apart. http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...oldchassis.jpg |
Re: 67-72 boatside pics
I cry a little inside every time I see a classic truck hacked to pieces for the sake of making a rock buggy. I agree, Pirate is the place to read thread after thread of the many ways to hack up a perfectly good truck.

Here is one I found with a dovetail. Would love the truck if not for the dovetail.

Dovetail  Sorry,I just get a kick out of all this. I'd call that a boat tail. That's what they called the old Bugattis and such that tapered in at the rear like an open wheeled racer of the time. I guess that's why I thought boat sides were tapered-in sides. A dovetail would be a flair, like a dovetail joint or a dovetail trailer or...a dovetail. Oh well,I'm just an old ignorant fart
(Disclaimer: Sorry I can't help. At least me joking about it takes your thread to the top. It's all good...I hope?) At least now I know what you mean. You mean like this, right? I want one, too! |
Re: 67-72 boatside pics
My dove tail will not be quit as sever as the black pickup. I still want to be able to fit my atv back there but still have a little more clearance on the corners for going through the tight trails and trees. And don't worry, I'm not cutting up a cherry pickup, its rusty and dented already. I could do that to one that was straight.

Re: 67-72 boatside pics
I agree with Larry that it is a shame when a nice truck is hacked up so happy to hear you are using a rust bucket.
Should be interesting when you are done. |

Re: 67-72 boatside pics
Looks good. That's how I'm planning on doing mine. It may be a while before I get to it. Just now got the 71 frame stripped down and now I am going to be boxing the entire frame. Then I will still have to get into a rolling chassis before I can start on body mods.
