Best IFS set-up for 56 Chevy Pickup front?

Where should I spend my $$$?

1st choice = No Limits. Other possibilities are Scotts Hot Rods or try Porterbuilt Streetrods. All 3 support this site!

Where ever you purchase, do your homework. There are many different types of from kits avail., and different manufacturers may focus on different areas. Price, Performance, Looks, Ride quality, Stance.... When you do compare price, be sure to compare apples to apples. Many companies charge extra for power racks, sway bars, boxing plates, and large brakes. While I have my own opinions, I will keep MOST to my self. I will warn you , however, to stay clear of Helix, and anything coming out of the Phoenix area associated with AIM, there is no love lost here, and I feel it is my duty to warn you of un-safe items that may kill you, or your family. (or me if I'm driving next to you)-(selfish, I know). Please at least take a look at our Wide-Ride IFS to see if it fits your needs. Good Luck with your project.

Re: Best IFS set-up for 56 Chevy Pickup front?

As for our STANDARD brake kits which is standard like mentioned we have all sizes available due to wheel fitment some brake kits may not be suitable for the application, further more the 11" rotor we use was used on a granada a 4000lb car. I used the shops listed because they are a couple of our biggest accounts ordering 3-5 front cross members a week. of course on high end builds we use 12"-13"-14" kits when permited. Also one thing unique about us at Scott's is that we are a high end build facility as well as a manufacture.
Nate and I have been friends for years (I was his rep while at air ride) and have carried that friendship along to this very day, same for Rob. I have a very unbias opinion and believe we all build a quality piece. One thing I have seen in the 6 months I've been with Scott's is every ones appreciation for the quality of product that we put out, every show I go to and every new account I pick up comments on how nice of a piece it is.

If you don't mind welding you could use a f body subframe or even clip a s10 frame too.The f body would be better you can get a rack and pinion easy for it,Also both are easy to air bag and big brakes.

Several possibilities..... The budget will ultimately narrow the choices in most cases. What's the budget here?

Hottrucks 04-20-2011 06:49 PM

Re: Best IFS set-up for 56 Chevy Pickup front?

I have to agree with Scoti...its all has to do with budget....I like Scotts stuff.. used it for years but I see his point about any certian ways items are build, used or built for adjustment...
another thing to think about is welding/fab capabilities.....you can buy alot of weld in parts and they will work and be safe if you can put them in yourself you can save a buck or two

so we really need to know what your end goal is??

how low do you want it
what type of steering
air or spring or coil over
what are you going to use the truck for
what wheels ( brake size)

IMAO I would look for a bolt in kit MOST of the kits out there are pretty complete this is a place you dont want to go back and do again....on a side note MARK YOUR CENTER OF WHEEL WELL BEFORE YOU TAKE THE FENDERS OFF...you'll thank me later...

another option I would use ( I'm old school) is just add a disc brake spindle and a lowering springs with a good panard bar....I love the look of a Kool straight axle they drive fine handle well and did I mention How Kool they look!!!

Sure am glad I decided to read this thread ,not only is it entertaining it's full of good info, especially since I'm in the market for a 55-59 Chevy pickup.;)

Re: Best IFS set-up for 56 Chevy Pickup front?

I'm in the middle of redneckville they don't buy anything they hit the junkyards. The 68-79 nova and car's based off it used a 2ngd gen f body subframe,There is a ton of kits out there most are mustang 2 based just welding in a gm clip is a lot cheaper is why most do it.

Re: Best IFS set-up for 56 Chevy Pickup front?

I want it to be low...If you guys look at last months Hot Rod magazine there was a 55 Chevy pickup from Wisconsin...that is my end goal looks wise. Zero cosmetic stuff! Engine will be an 454 out of my 89 dually. I will say a driver for now, but who knows there may just be a turbo in the works...you never know!

As far as fab work needed my best friend is a certified tig welder so welding is not a concern at all!

Coilovers
Manual rack
Drive it on nice days
Probably 11-12" brakes and some aftermarkets skinnies up front.

Thanks in advance for the info...This forum is great!!!

Re: Best IFS set-up for 56 Chevy Pickup front?

Both scotts and nolimit up there will have anything you could want for it,Probably a forum member discount too.Any thoughts on the rear end and rear suspension? If your planing big power later i would look in to a new frame now so your ready when it comes time.

Hottrucks 04-22-2011 06:25 AM

Re: Best IFS set-up for 56 Chevy Pickup front?

after reading that I think you need to talk to a good vender and buy a weld in kit......box up your frame and work your way to the back...who ever you deal with be sure to see What they are going to do for you about buying a 4 link for the rear......if your going to run skinnies than plan on a disc brake rear too....

be sure to start a build it sounds like a fun build

What's up with the edit? Not allowed to voice our opinions on supporting vendors products? He wasn't bashing anyone, just stating why he(and I'm sure others) prefers no limits stuff over scotts.

When you get the truck take some pictures and do a build thread on here.

Change of plans possible- Secured a 12 Valve cummins this weekend and I am really strongly considering this engine. Does this change everyones opinion on a front set-up? Cummins weighs in over 1000 lbs!

robnolimit 04-24-2011 01:29 PM

Re: Best IFS set-up for 56 Chevy Pickup front?

I have seen several diesel swaps, and not many with good results. The cummings, & trans will wiegh more than 2x the normal small block-AOD set up. And, all of it is front wieght. Now, not to say it cant be done, but, adding heavier springs to and IFS is not enough. Even our Wide-Ride IFS has it's performance boundries. The successfull diesel swaps that I have seen move toward more 'work truck' components, such as chev's '73 - '87 platforms, but, they are wider than the '55 - '59, so stance and wheel choice come into play. Please remember that this is just my humble opinion, and I'm trying to help :) Have a Happy Easter.

Don't see any edit in this thread. Both statments made at different times..
Both are still on here.

Re: Best IFS set-up for 56 Chevy Pickup front?

in a truck that already has way too much weight on the front vs. rear I think a cummins would be a tire smoking animal and thats about it.

may as well keep a straight axle underneath the front because no matter what it will handle terrible.

Re: Best IFS set-up for 56 Chevy Pickup front?

Does anyone know about this truck and the front suspension on it? I can't imagine a 56 frame wouldn't be stronger than today's 1/2 ton frames.
