Using a Super T-10 4spd behind a GM??
 

Good evening guys.

I've had this Super T-10 that I got from a buddy about 20+yrs ago that was supposed to be a rebuilt unit, then it sat pretty much til now..

The Thing is, it came from a ford application and wondered what it would take to adapt a GM bell housing to it.
The bolt pattern (4 bolts) are two up top and then other two, but way down the face of front housing.
One thing I was wondering was how I could use a GM bell housing but don't know the depth/length of input shaft that would be needed to reach into the back of the GM crankshaft.
And maybe a main body swap would give me the correct bolt pattern.?
I'll give some measurements in a bit.
Or if it would be better to just sell it and then get the correct trans (overdrive!?) for a 400-500+ V8.

Didn't know Ford used a Super T-10. If indeed it is, don't see why couldn't swap parts over to fit a GM. They are strong trannies from what I was told. Old school car guys said there stronger than a M-22.

From what he told me was, that it came from a early 60's T-bird and he wanted to install in a '65 mustang that he had at the time.
BUT knowing ford, and how they would 'change' things mid-year, it wouldn't fit his application with a modern (late 80's-early 90's) 302. can't remember the specifics.
It's a heavy little booger! need to hook up a cordless drill to it and see if I can figure out the ratio's for each gear.

I'm gonna try and log in with my phone to show pics.
It doesn't look like the GM offerings of a Super T like on Ebay etc..

If I can get a NON-SFI bell housing to work and a clutch assy that would be just peachy..

If the picture doesn't match a Super T-10, could it be a Ford top-loader?

Borg Warner T10 transmissions were used by Gm,Ford, AMC and evening Chrysler factories in the 50’s and 60’s. When the horsepower increased in the 60’s, Gm went to the Muncie 4 speed. The Super T10 transmission showed up in, I believe, 1974 in Gm cars. The Super T10 has a fine spline input shaft and the output is the same spline as a TH400. There was also a heavy duty T10 that was never used in a production car but was available over the counter in GM parts departments. This heavy duty unit was known as the “rock crusher”. The Muncie M22 was also called the rock crusher too, because of the different angle of the 1,2 and 3 gears that also caused the whine in those 3 gears.
I’m not a Ford guy, but check you numbers on your T10 and do some searching around the inter web as you may have a tranny from a Shelby or something.
The numbers plus a little searching may reveal something rare,,, or not. I say this because I remember seeing an ad on Craigslist for a Shelby T10 and the guy wanted $10k. Anyway, cases and parts are available to switch the guts to a a Chevy bolt pattern on epay.

OK, finally found some pics. BUT it's a Ebay add. Looks just like it besides color (mine's a little darker) and a little dust from sitting.

Aaahh Ford.. Don't know what or why the big dip in the tail housing though..
If I have to swap cases/housings JUST to make it work, I've still got a 4spd.
Maybe I'll try and sell it, and put that money down toward a street 5spd.

(got a couple NV4500's, but it's the granny low that can be kind of annoying in a light vehicle. I'm just so used to moving the shifter to first {left-up} instead of 2nd {left-down}, that it's kind of embarrassing and looks like I don't know how to shift coming off a light or stop.)

Molino; It looks like on mine that any number or stamp was shaved/ground off from the side case where the shifter posts come through. Other than that, it's just the regular LARGE cast "T-10" etc on the other side and tail. I did find what might be a date code though. D303 3something..
So maybe a April, 30 1963?? (if yer gonna stamp it, HIT the frikken thing!!)

Geezer; I asked my kids how to change it, and they give me this 'look'.. DAAAAD, I don't post to forums!! Maybe 'cause they'd have to read.. (they just do snap-chat and IM)
So, I got into my settings and changed it. NOW, I don't know if this new change will modify the existing pictures or if it's only the pictures I take NOW that I changed the setting??

For what it costs to change the case etc, you can likely buy a complete rebuilt trans for close to a grand. And a better ratio set up too.
These guys have them. And they might buy yours too.

Nv4500 doesn't have a granny low....but I can start out in 2nd...
I think I'd sell or swap for a gm trans...

Nv4500 is definitely a granny. First Is around 5.6:1 for the higher ratio. Lowest factory granny I know of was a sm420 at 7.20:1 for a light truck. Ch465 was 6.54:1. The nv3500 low gear 1st was 4:1.

I guess it's all in what you consider the definition of "granny gear" is...of the 2 nvs I have I wouldnt call either a granny gear...now my sm465 had what I consider granny 1st
My nv4500 I use 1st gear to get rolling..2nd is a little to steep to start out in..and that's with axle ratios of 4.10s and 4.56s
The sm465 in front of 4.10s could always start out in 2nd...unless i had a load ...1st wasn't needed..
Rear axle ratios and tire size affect drive ratios...

I've never heard the T10 or ST10 referred to as a rock crusher, thats M22 only.

Mongo, I have watched some of your projects so I know that you know what your are talking about. If you were anyone else I would be asking if you are thinking of th NV3500! My k20 had a 465 factory and I pulled it and installed a nv4500 out of a dodge diesel. I lost a little first gear but not enough to really notice it. With 4.10s and a big crammed 400sb it could use 4.56 gears but first is never the issue. I use first to get up my driveway in 4x4 or moving loads of oak to the wood pile. The nv4500 got pulled out of the dodge because it was making some death noises at full boost on a built 12v and got replaced by a 6spd. That 5spd has hauled over 16k trailer with 3.55 gears without issues when it had well over 1000ftlbs of Cummins power. Yes I abuse my trucks

wow..burningoil...sounds like you got a beast of a truck..
for my purposes I wish I had the ratios of the old style nv's...I regularly pull approx. 10k loaded trailer with my C30/nv4500/4.10s..its never missed a lick..but I really wish it was a little lower geared..ive stalled it more than once in 1st..once rolling there's no issues...trying to start out in 2nd I have to ride the clutch a little more than I like to get moving...
