250 Inline 6 starter fitment problem

Hi guys, just got my new 250 installed in my 1976 c10.
for whatever reason I decided to install my starter after I got the engine in the truck. So I crawled under the truck and went to bolt it up and then had the realization that I had problems.
So I bought a different starter went to bolt that up and and came to the bigger realization that I REALY had problems!
So my starter is the one that came off my original engine block (had a cracked water jacket)
My new engine block is I believe a 1969 block.
The truck has the 4 speed Manual transmission.

So I guess there are several ways chevrolet mounted starters to these engines over the years, I did not have a clue they did this and just thought fitment was all the same, Here's what I now know thus far...

My original block had the the starter bolted to the block with an OFFSET bolt pattern.
My New block has holes for a starter in the block but uses a Straight bolt pattern (bolts directly across from another)

So on the parts websites I see for a 1969 c10 with a 250 two starter options,
a starter with a straight bolt pattern listed as for use with an AUTOMATIC transmission.

And a starter that bolts to the BELLHOUSING instead of the Block listed as for use with a MANUAL transmission.

I foolishly think "oh one with a straight bolt pattern, that's what I need, it says for automatic but whatever" and I buy it.

So today I go to put my new starter on... NOPE! Not gonna fit.

Im thinking my only option at this point is change out the bellhousing for one that the starter will bolt directly to unless somebody out there knows of a starter that will work with my newer manual transmission bellhousing and fly wheel and bolt to the block with the straight bolt pattern.

Getting a different bellhousing isn't such a big deal but my Brother and I spent a weekend putting that engine and transmission in the truck and it makes me mad to think I will have to pull it all apart again.

Anyone have any suggestions?

You need to match the starter to the flywheel tooth count.
Info here.

Re: 250 Inline 6 starter fitment problem

I have the 14 inch flywheel and the original engine had the offset starter bolts.
The new engine has no hole in the block for the offset bolt, so ok just as I figured, the only way I'm gonna be able to run this engine with this transmission in this truck is to get a different bell housing the one where the starter bolts to it.
This just sucks but guess its just the way it is.

Thanks for the info geezer

That's one way, and, might I add, the most difficult way, because you may run into trouble locating one of those early bellhousings.. The simplest way to solve the problem is to swap flywheels.. Do what geezer#99 said -- match the flywheel to the starter.. You need a 153 tooth flywheel.

Re: 250 Inline 6 starter fitment problem

So running the smaller flywheel would mean running a smaller clutch right?
Would this have any significant affect on durability? As I plan on using this truck like a truck and would like to keep it as heavy duty as possible.

Re: 250 Inline 6 starter fitment problem

Depends on the clutch style.
With a Chevy you have two styles.
A 3 finger borg and beck and a multiple finger diaphragm.
A smaller 3 finger plate could be rated higher than a larger multiple finger plate.
It’s all about clamping force. And comfort zone. A higher clamping force plate can be harder to control. Stiffer action with a 3 finger. Smoother action with a multiple finger.

What do you have now?

I have the multiple finger style

Some contributors are adding information that doesn't apply. You can run the same clutch you have, no matter the style or size. It will fit... Get the flywheel to match the starter and transfer all the clutch parts to that flywheel..

Re: 250 Inline 6 starter fitment problem

Ya, but some contributors think the original clutch might not just swap over.
It depends on whether he has an 11inch or a 10.5 inch clutch.
I guess he’ll find out.

Re: 250 Inline 6 starter fitment problem

Guess I will just have to disassemble it and find it out what clutch I have.
Whatever route I go with it's gonna have to come back upart.
We'll see what happens tomorrow.

Well, got it apart...

I have the 11 inch clutch.
Don't think it will work on the smaller flywheel.

Hi guys just wanted to update this. I got a new smaller flywheel and clutch and got it installed and transmission is back in. Everything seems to fit.
Thanks for your guys help!

So, does the 11 inch clutch fit the smaller flywheel?
Some contributors would like to know.

Re: 250 Inline 6 starter fitment problem

So I just bought a new smaller flywheel and smaller clutch and pressure plate.
Put it all together starter and everything fits.

As far as running the bigger clutch with the smaller flywheel, to be completely honest I didn't as far as I remember actually test fit them but from my memory of visual inspection of size difference I would say that I dont think it would fit.

I'm pretty sure the clutch and flywheel I'm using now is the same that would have been used in the 3 speed 3 on the tree trucks. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: 250 Inline 6 starter fitment problem

Ok let's settle this...
The following info I have taken from rockauto.com from the two different size flywheels they sell for a 250 straight 6 in a c10

The 153 tooth flywheel for use with the 10'' clutch
Pressure plate bolt circle: 11.626''

The 168 tooth flywheel for use with the 11'' clutch
Pressure plate bolt circle: 12.625''

https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...,flywheel,5348

So short answer: No the 11'' clutch and pressure plate will not work on the 153 tooth flywheel.

Thanks for that good info.

Re: 250 Inline 6 starter fitment problem

I took out a 250 and I believe the starter had 3 bolts horizontally installed to the bell housing of the 4 sp. I put in a 350 and starter with its vertically mounted bolts to the engine block. I used the same clutch and flywheel as off the 250. Everything fit. At least that's the way I remember it. I suppose it must have had the smaller flywheel.

Edit: Oops I was wrong. Still using the 250 starter with the 3 horizontal bolts.
