For a rear disc conversion on a C30, you will have to use the K20 front rotors and the '76-'78 Eldorado rear calipers with the e-brake

What caliper is used with a C30 disc conversion. Want to keep e-brake type caliper. I will be also using 16" facory steel wheels

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

I haven't really dealt with the C30's, so I'm not sure. It is possible that you may have the smaller of the brakes available for the C30's. I do know that there were bigger drums available on some of the dually's in the rear, so maybe there is a bigger caliper available? Does your truck already have hydroboost?

Thanks Capt'n! Any idea of a front brake improvement for the early '80s C30 duallys?

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Yes my truck allready has hydroboost. I have a 76 cc dually which I am converting to 4wd. I have read before about possible clearance issues with d-52 calipers with smaller wheels. Just trying to clear it up hopefully with someone with experience. I have heard about using a 2003 chevy express van rotors on the c30's instead of the 3/4 ton front rotors, with 1/4" spacers. I have a dana 70HD.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

When converting to rear disc on any of the 8 hole differentials, you need to run at least 16" wheels. Otherwise you will need to do a bunch of grinding on the outside of the caliper. I'm only familar with the conversion using the '73+ K20 rotors. What is the advantage to the Express/Savana rotors? Are they a larger diameter?

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

I do not have the facts but they appear to be altleast 8" deep, that would get the caliper away from the wheel, as appose to the 3/4 ton rotor which is probebly only 2" deep.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

The '71-'86 K20 front rotors are 12.50" diameter, 1.29" thick, and 2.81" in overall height. The '99-'10 Express/Savana front rotors are 12.79" diameter, 1.50 thick, and 3.51" in overall height.

So yes they are a bit deeper, .70" to be exact. And they are slightly larger in diameter, and thicker as well. However you won't be able to use a D52 caliper on these, as they are just too thick. You would likely have to use the Express/Savana rear calipers, which may not be a bad thing, since I believe they are a dual piston caliper.

You might also be able to use the rear rotors and calipers for the Express/Sanvana. The rotors are 13.0" diameter, 1.40 thick and 3.42" in overall height.

This is the first that I've heard of using these rotors for a rear disc conversion of this type, so I don't know for sure if you could run 15" wheels without grinding these calipers also. Where did you hear/read about this?

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

I seen another guy on pirate 4x4 experimenting with this set up but he was just using 3/4 ton caliper thou as it was strictly for off road -no need for the emergency brake. He is running the e4xpress van rotor with 1/4 spacers for caliper aligment with his 3/4 ton calipers.

Thanks for the specs it is greatly apprecited. I will be running 16" steel dual factory steel wheels with my dana 70hd.

I am in the middle of a restoration converting a 1976 2wd CC crewcab to 4wd.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

No, Captainfab, no hydroboost . . . yet. Plan on it though just to replace the bulky looking vac booster. The reason I was looking for some front brake improvement for my '81 C30 DRW (which is really a converted C20 SRW), is that I tend to drive it, lets just say, aggressively.
I know, I know, shame on me!

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

I know its somewhat off topic, But I'm wondering what Madcow75 is doing with my avatar? But then I noticed the extra set of windows behind the cab!
Wait until you see my dog of a dually! We're talking ugly enough that only a metal crusher would love it!

look good im gonna order one in a few weeks. couple questions. will my disc/ drum brake booster work, or will i need the disc/ disc booster?and just to clarify its adding half inch to the width of the rearend or half inch on each side?clean work.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Your booster will be just fine. However you should change your master cylinder to a disc/disc master. You will also want either a disc/disc proportioning valve, or an adjustable valve in the rear line. Wilwood makes a nice unit that is all in one.

Captainfab----- you wrote: "These brackets will bolt onto the truck 12 bolt rear differentials from '64-'82 and the 10 bolt truck differentials from '83-'87"...

What is the reason this wont work with a 12 bolt from an 83-87?

Captainfab 05-31-2011 11:37 PM

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Because GM didn't make any 12 bolts from '83-'87. The last year for the 12 bolt in the C10's was 1982.

I bought my kit just over a year ago and just now put them on......I went ahead and blasted, painted them before even test fitting them. I can't tell you how nice it feels when EVERTHING bolts up like it's suppose too....very nice product!!

do you have any in stock, my leaking disc/drum proportion valve has forced me to go ahead and do a rear disc brake conversion using wilwood d-52 calipers and rear diff rebuild

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Yes I have a few sets in stock in bare steel. Powder coated ones will be a week or so to have done.
