87 gmc np208 transfer case check
Hello all, I'm brand new on here so I hope I'm doin' this right. If not, please let me know. I'm trying to figure out how to properly check the fluid in my transfer case. I'm assuming on level ground but should it be running or not. Also, everything I read says to use transmission fluid, not gear dope in this transfer case. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: 87 gmc np208 transfer case check
Don't get under the truck with it running, it is not necessary (and scary as hell). Use Dextron 2? 3? ATF. check fluid level at the big plug (24mm hex head IIRC). Consult your owner manual for proper fluid (if available).

Crawl under the truck behind the t-case theres 2 plugs one on the top and one on the bottom,,,unscrew the top one and fluid should be at level if not dripping a bit from there.

Re: 87 gmc np208 transfer case check
thanks for the info guys. Should the truck be running or not when I check it?

Re: 87 gmc np208 transfer case check
It would not make any difference running or not. Nothing is going inside the t-case unless the truck is moving. For safety reasons do it with the engine off!
