Anyone wanna help me decipher this gear pattern?

I am regearing a Dana 30 front end (not a c10, it's a Jeep)
Went from 4.10s to 4.88s, I'm having a pretty steep learning curve, to say the least.
I shimmed the pinion to get the pattern deeper into the ring. at .048 it was exactly the same pattern, just a bit deeper.
I removed some shims, this is with the pinion shimmed @ .042
Seems to be centered but the pattern is very narrow. backlash is perhaps on the tight side @ .006 but it is in spec.

My hunch is that the pinion is too deep??? ...If so how much(ish)?
I would really appreciate some input from someone with some experience.

seems a little too far in from what I,ve seen on gear patterns when I did mine. Pic. might be a little deceiving for me . I,m sure someone will chime in soon

Yeah, my camera kinda sux. I'll try to get some better pics. I am concerned about how narrow the pattern is.

that looks pretty deep yes, If it were me I'd make a .010 change (move pinion farther away from ring) and re check w/ same backlash

So... Yeah, that was deep. I walked the pinion back .040" (no, that's not a typo) and it's starting to look like a recognizable pattern. I'm learning. :dohh:

woah, yeah deep....I was guessing making changes at .010 or more... I end up trial and error method since I don't have the depth measuring tools.
