78 is too wide, It's too dark to go measure my 77 but I know that seat is a lot wider than my 71 or AD trucks.
At the back of the seat cushion in an AD the hip room and that is door to door is 60 inches. The cab is a couple of inches narrower at the front of the seat. This says that shoulder room in the 73/87 is 61.6 inches. I'm thinking that 55.2 to 87 seats are all too wide and 88 got narrower again. I remember that when the 88 came out a lot of guys especially big guys fussed that the 88 was too small inside the cab. Folks are always fussing about ADtrucks not having enough leg room but the AD has 41.8 inches from foot board to seat back and the 75 has 42.2 a whole 4 thenths of an inch. |

I pulled the stock springs - not a single broken one after 65 years! - Had the frame powder coated and put a plywood backer on it. Used modern foam sculpted to make a more modern comfortable shape. Covered in a pretty leather-like vinyl. It's been great and of course it bolted right in and fit perfectly. |
Re: 1956 bench seat
If you don't have the frame and springs. Ford F100 seats fit as well
so you can look for 50's, 60;s and some 70s fords and look for chevys as well. I just recovered mine to look like chevy pattern. I also cut a inch out of the top bar on back rest. (left everything else the same) and welded in shorter in the middle. This just pulled in the top of the seat a little. this gave it more clearance on the side walls and let me put it back a little farther. But always measure what you find. I found out many of the models are not what the person says they are sometimes. My excuse of putting a ford part in a chevy is at least when i pass gas on the seat ford is getting it :) |
