What Brand of Stud Welder to buy?

Hey Gents,

I'm getting into some minor body dent repairs on the truck and am looking to buy a Stud Welder. Amazon sells Vevor brand but it seems to have not so good reviews.

Is there another company that makes these that aren't going to break the bank but are of decent quality that you'd recommend?

Cheers!

hi, my girl friend bought me a harbor freight stud gun to pull out a dent in my oil pan that was touching the crank. worked well and got the dent out without putting a hole in it. BROWN 70

I bought a Harbor Freight stud puller gun and puller. Worked well for a hobby project like my 68 C10.
But if I was working in a production shop I would buy a slide hammer with collet like Snap On has. The Snap On slide hammer has a collet the you tighten more or less like a hand drill.

I agree 100%. I too have the Harbor Freight stud welder.
It works fine for how cheap it is. Definitely hobby Grade though.
The slide hammer leaves a lot to be desired, the way it grips the stud is not great, kind of fiddly . Years ago in 1987 when I was starting to buy tools I bought a very nice stud gun , professional grade, a Bluepoint if memory serves. It was expensive at almost $600 then. It came in a nice case and had attachments like a shrinking tip, but the best thing was the slide hammer was like LS short box described tightening similar to a cordless drill chuck , much better and faster for production use. Wish I still had it, never sell your tools or guns if you can help it…..

I also have a Harbor freight stud gun but didn’t like the slide hammer. I welded vise grips to another cheap one I have and also made a stud lever which allows me to apply pressure to the dent while hammering down the high perimeter. Something you can’t easily do with a slide hammer.

Is this the same one from Amazon?

You also get a Discount if you order direct from Vevor.

I've got an H&S Autoshot I picked up at the pawn shop. It is great.

I also have the Harbor freight one but I've never used it. Some one told me the Harbor Freight ones work better if you buy studs that are better grade.

I'm cheap. I buy the studs from Harbor freight and tack them on with my tig welder and pull them with a slide hammer that i got from Eastwood.

The vevor has several accessories the HF doesn’t. Like shrinking tips and wavy crease pullers. If I were doing it again, as a hobbyist, I’d prolly go with the vevor.

Appreciate the tip, but I'm in Canada and I'm sure ordering from Vevor direct will be crazy shipping costs on top

I just done a Search and Vevor says from California to Canada the shipping is free.

It might be different when you check on your computer. ;)
