Priming Quadrajet
 

I have a particular Quadrajet that no matter which truck I put it on, I have to prime it by pouring gas into it to get it to start. It then runs fine, and will start again if I restart it within a few hours. I can get it to start by copious pedal pumping and cranking, but it is difficult. I just rebuilt it, and it performs great, but in the morning, I am best off popping the hood, pouring in some gas, then cranking. Is there a solution?

Did you epoxie the plugs that are in the bottom of the bowl? They are prone to leak and then you lose the gasoline in the bowl over time.

A way to check is to remove the carburetor, leave the fuel in it and take the plate off of the bottom to check if there is fuel in the
hollow under the plugs. It should be dry. (Keep the carb level and up right to avoid spilling fuel when you pull the plate off).

Quadrajets have several plugs that were put in to seal passages where they drilled the casting. One of yours is leaking and all the gas from your bowl is leaking into your motor while it is sitting. You can seal the plugs with epoxy, but it will probably require total tear down of the carb. I would get that carb off the motor as soon as possible.

I'd change your oil too.Gas leaking into the eng. when it's not running will go past the rings and down into your oil pan mixing with your oil and breaking it down.You can imagine the effect of enough gas mixing with your oil.

Why didn't I know that? Been rodding around for 40 ears, and never knew about the plugs!
