Inner fender / fender seal location
 

I'm unsure on where to locate the rubber seals, the instructions have me confused as to the exact location of the rubber strips mentioned in the document below:

Can someone please clarify for me where these strips go? (pictures would help)

I didn’t understand that document either. That first part is for a plate that screws to each edge of the firewall on the right and left side. The plate fills a hole that the inner fender does not cover. Picture of that area. I’ve seen clutch head screws, or hex head used to secure the plates. My plates were lost at the custom shop. I found some at a junk yard in Montana. Picture attached, you can see the staples that held the seals. My truck has the floor brake lever. If your truck has the foot operated parking brake, the driver side plate will be L-shaped.
The second part of the document is for the front of the inner fender. Picture of the inner fender on it’s side, and picture assembled.

I went out and took shots of the 49 cab and the 51 cab I have sitting on a traile out back and originally the "seal" was held on with wire staples. Those seals must have deterioriated pretty fast because I don't remember ever actually seeing one but unless they got left off the plates are always there.

The one off the 49 3100 cab is different than the one off the orange 51 4100 cab.

Dumb question, but how are the staples holding the rubber seal to the metal of the inner fender?

they go through the fender like it was paper. Must be quite the stapler they used

The kit I bought from Brothers with the rubber seals also came with a group of staples and seems to indicate that they are simply inserted. Unless there is some incantation one must utter to tame the gods of steel to allow the staple to penetrate the inner fender, I'm confused on how to get them to penetrate.

yeah, GM used staples to hold a few rubber items onto a steel part. musta been a heck of a stapler, one you don't wanna mess with. it amazes me to see a staple that went through a steel part just fine but then something bends it over on the backside like it is butter. I could see it now, if I had one, the wife comes out to get me at bedtime, only to find me pinned to the inner fender screaming like a banshee. haha.

Agreed, I’d likely bleed out before the wife found me stapled to the truck. I think I’ll just use some silicon adhesive to hold them in place. Thanks!

I would use a weatherstrip adhesive rather than a silcone. you could also try the urethane they use for windshields, it holds well but the rubber would need to be held in place with tape until the stuff dries

I have poked the new staples through the old holes with a pair of needle nose then bent them over. But I second using weatherstrip adhesive. your local autoparts place probably has some

I've used Loctite 37532 Black Weatherstrip Adhesive and some 3M stuff that is yellowish

I actually have a tube of both on the shelf, good call that's what I'll use.

Unfortunately, the two inner fenders don't have those holes since 1) one of them is a new repro part and 2) both have been powder coated thus sealing up any small staple holes. I'll pass on the staples and use the adhesive. Thanks for all the info.

I have drilled small holes where the original staple holes were located to make using new staples much easier. (Stainless steel staples to avoid rust)
