Today I set the 292 in the short bed K10 frame . I thought I would show some pictures of the mounts. Drivers side mount sticks out further from frame than passenger side but engine is centered.

Always great to see a 292 getting put into a k10 or k20. Great engine IMO, I have owned several, none have let me down.

Post more of your progress, would love to see the result!

I'm planning on keeping the pictures coming. What I'm doing now is test fitting the mechanicals in the frame. The frame I acquired had some cross members missing so swapping them from the long bed donor frame. Next is the transfer case.
Once everything is fit I will remove the engine and transfer case and take the frame over to Ballard Forge and have them rivet the mounts in place and rivet any parts that were bolted to the frame. I have several hangers that were bolted in place prior to my ownership of the frame and all are loose to some degree.

I thought I would post an update on my Progess so far on restoring my 1966 K10. I have completed the frame restoration. Got the front and rear differentials rebuilt the Rockwell transfer case is on the bench being put back together. disc brake conversion has been done. Cab is back from being dipped.

I have been asked what lube I am going to use in my closed knuckle Dana 44. I have not fully decided yet have been looking at the corn picker lube from tractor supply but have not lubed the truck yet

Was your k10 frame factory 292 or was it 283? Just curious if you had to relocate the engine perch that comes riveted to the frame from the factory in order to accommodate the 292.

I seem to remember that either the 292 or the 250 six cylinder engine has the engine mount offset from the passenger side or the drivers side.

My k10 originally came with the 283, which was missing when I got the truck. I'm tempted to put a 292 in the truck instead of a v8, just not sure if the engine perches on the frame need to be moved for the 292.

I appreciate the kind words. As for the truck originally coming with a 292? No it did not. It had a 230 six in it. A guy on facebook market place was selling a 292 with complete 66 running gear. He was putting in a 383 Stroker so stripped out the 292 and all associated parts from radiator, driveshafts transfer case etc. The package came with the special mount to install the 292. It looks similar to the v8 perch but is different. it is actually shorter so you use the V8 perch on the driver side and the shorter perch on the passenger side. The frame has the proper holes already in it so it was simple to move it forward. As for the 4 wheel drive disc conversion I bought the package from horsepower sales came as a engineered kit probably could have saved some money buying a different front end and stripping the disc brakes off it but then why not just install it rather than the closed knuckle. I will say though the only thing about the horsepower sales kit was I had to upgrade the hubs from the original Warn M8s which were perfectly fine to the newer style warn premium hubs. I think a 2 wheel drive would be way simpler to put in the 292 than the 4x4 just because of the mount. The mount looks like someone fabricated it from a V8 perch

My K10 also originally came from the factory with a 283. Drivers side mounts are the same no matter what engine you use. On the passenger side, all engines EXCEPT the 292 use the same mount. Not only is the mount further forward than the other engines, but is unique to the 292. To make matters worse, the unique 2wd mount is different from the even rarer 4wd version.

I was fortunate to find the correct part on this forum back when I did mine (and for a very reasonable price, members here are great!). Have seen others move, then modify a V8 mount as shown in the picture, or modify a 2wd mount. I was lucky to find the right part, as I don’t have the fabrication skills necessary to make one as nice as the one in the picture.

Good luck with whatever you do, as the 292 is indeed the perfect engine for a K truck, and well worth the trouble to fit

Thank you for the clarification Tom, I was thinking that it would be somewhat challenging to install a 292 in a k10 that didn't come with one from the factory. Not only because 292 stuff is unique to all other motor setups of this era, but that the k10 frames a particularly unique and rare as well.

I guess I can start hunting everything down needed to make the conversion. The 283 will work fine until I source everything else.

Great pictures and information on this build AlaskaK10, I enjoy seeing your progress. So nice to see your pictures too; amazing what good lighting and a clean, light colored floor can do to see all the detail in your pics.

Helps so much when working on K10 stuff, since it is a rare and not very much documentation on them. Thanks again!
