Got a fiberglass tonneau cover free
 

I got this cover given to Mr for free for my 67 short box. Seals we and everything was there so even if I don't use it I couldn't pass it up. Now to my question. There are no cracks or any major damage to it but the top looks is not smooth. It looks like the gel coat is a bit wavy like major orange peel. Can this be worked to be smooth How is this repair done and is it worth the time needed? Since I got it free I have a tad longer leash can spend on it I guess.

Is that finish by design?...ive seen them with a textured finish and a smooth finish..it could be smoothed..but something that big and that flat would have to be perfect, or itd look way worse

It looks like it was the way it was made. Around the edges it's smoother than in the middle.

What a great deal! From what I have seen there is only one company making these for the old trucks now. Betting close to 1k with shipping at this point. Some of the companies used to offer the textured finishes. If paint/finish is not coming up anywhere. Scuff, shoot with high build primer, block sand. You want to avoid going through the gel coat, it will cause problems in the future if you do. Rinse and repeat primer and sand until smooth. Apply sealer and then color.

I really like the idea of having a cover but I can't get over how these kill the top box body line with the edge that hangs over the box. I have no clue when it comes to fiberglass but I would like to (most likely have done bu a pro) have the edges trimmed and possibly sectioned and glass the edges back on so they sit more even with the edge of the box and don't hang over. Is this something that can be done? It doesn't look like anyone makes a flush hard cover anymore. It would still sit on top and seal just getting rid of the overhang

Myself, I do not mind the lip. All the flush covers leak. IMO fine for a show truck or garage, fair weather vehicle. You could trim edge down and hope structure in the flat surface will suffice? On my truck https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...31&postcount=3

I'd be afraid to cut the lips off that thing gains a big portion of its strength with those lips being there. The torsion the cover could do without them is unpredictable. If you were to remove them and let the cover rest on some angle just below the edge of the top of the bedside would leak like crazy as stated above. Either way good luck. By the way I traded a bedcover like that for a 99-07 chevy short bed for my 68 GMC factory big block with buddies and speed warning factory a/c. Bad part for me it is a 3/4 ton but I have a short bed and frame for it. Someday....

Ok I do agree with that. I figured I'd get opinions. I wonder if I trimmed the front of the lip slightly to flow with the body line in the box would that be ok? Not straight tight with the top of the cover just slightly so it doesn't cover the gront of the body line and looks smootherfrom the side?

i dont think you would lose much integrity doing that
