Factory Vinyl Seat

Hello,

Anyone know if this is the factory upholstery for bench seat in a 1978 GMC C15?

Any sources out there to replace. It's cool looking printed vinyl. I'd like to replace them. The seats are messed up. This pic is the best part of the seat.

The RPO Code is 64V-VUU1 Buckskin Vinyl.

I restore seats, but I have to say I have never seen this pattern.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if it hadn't been recovered at some point. The RPO code is 64V. Is that a solid Buckskin color? I've been using what little Google Ninja skills I have to try and find pics of original interiors, but so far no luck.

Yeah that would be Buckskin, and that seat cover is not Buckskin. So most likely it got recovered.

Buckskin is very close to the SaddleTan color.

That sure looks original to me. I'd check with SMS to see if they might have some.

Yeah, it does. It's the style in the upper right only in tan. It has the smooth vinyl piece in the middle too. I'm out of town, but can take a pic of yhe whole seat when I get back. What is SMS?

SMS Auto Fabrics. Give them a call with your year/make and then interior code and they'll send you samples free of charge.

I actually had SMS make my cover. That's the correct fabric for a Cheyenne Super in 74. They take a long time, however. You can just order the fabric from them, however, and have someone local do it for you. Much quicker that way.

Just as soon as I said I’ve never seen that cover, look what I come across, lol

Lol, that's almost exactly mine only that's blue. I sent a request to SMS to see what they say. I'm out of town, but I'll get the seat out when I'm back. I mostly want to clean under the seat. It's a mess. Plus I'm hoping the wheel lock key is under there.

Have that same cover in a 76 that I know is original since we are the original owners

Hello,

Got the seat out. I was also looking for the security lug nut key. Didn't find that though. Also wanted to clean the garbage out from underneath the seat. I also sent a request to SMS to see if they have this material available. Or something similar.

Just be ready for sticker shock, if they do have it. Nothing that comes from SMS is cheap.

Got it, thanks. If it's too costly, I'll find a suitable sub.

Will be following, usually base model vinyl patterns are left out of all restoration catalogs.

The guy that makes most of my covers for the seats I restore, pretty much stopped buying fabric from them. One reason they can be so expensive, is that you have to buy more fabric than what you actually need. If the fabrics or materials are the actual original materials, then a lot of times there are sections in the bolt that are no good. He has tried to use them for specific original fabrics that people wanted for their seat covers, and by the time he was able to get enough fabric, the seat cover was going to be as much as one of my complete Restored seats! And most people, once they hear what a cover from them is going to cost, they choose another less expensive fabric. Which is mainly what we do for the covers on my seats.
And with these printed vinyl seats, they dry out easily. I never liked those kind of covers originally, and I still don’t like them on the new covers. I like the fabric seat covers much better than all vinyl.

Seat cover question for you -- From a purely practical standpoint, is factory vinyl as good as it gets, or do you recommend something else? I'm thinking for a nice k20 truck that might have a three-day old calf scrambling around on the passenger seat at noon, and a well-dressed girlfriend sitting on that same seat in the evening. Are there sturdier and easier-to-clean options than factory vinyl that still have a classic good look to them? Does leather or any exotic treated fabric have an edge over vinyl in this case?

If you may have a 3 day old calf in the seat at times, I would stick with the vinyl. It’s easy to clean.
Leather is expensive.

Not dark Saddle. It’s called Saddle Tan, but it’s actually a light Saddle Tan.

Well, to match the samples I was sent from the guy that did my upholstery it was called dark saddle to match the piece that came out from under the sear hinge cover.

My carpet also didn’t match the 81-87 colors (i guess the 88-91s were slightly different)
My door panels are also a lot darker than my earlier truck with saddle tan interior

Dark Saddle is definitely darker than Saddle Tan. It’s like Brown. Some of the 88-91’s, was a little different. It has a name, just can’t think of it off the top of my head, but it’s not Dark Saddle. Oh it’s going to drive me nuts until I can think of the color name, lol. The armrest looks like DS. But it could also just be the lighting in the photos that’s making the panels themselves look lighter.
This is Dark Saddle.

Medium cognac is the color for the 88-91 you’re probably thinking of. That is the interior color on my 88 and looks very close to those pics above.

This is medium cognac interior, unrestored panel. It’s a very close color to the earlier buckskin color in the late 70’s trucks
