what year was first spin on filter on v8's?

what year did they begin putting the spin on filter on the v 8's.

I thought 68 was the year.

My truck has the older canister style.

My 69 3/4 ton with a 350 built Dec.,1968, was delivered new with a canister filter. What year is your truck? For some reason, I think the change was made in 1970.

Spin on filters began in '68 along with the large journal blocks.

mine is the 68K20 with a 327. It has the older style. It came off the line sometime befor april 1968.

I always thought the spin on filters were first used in 68. Was that in cars.

I worked on big trucks back in the 70's. they used the 2 quart canister style filters. I wonder if any of those are still around. PH373's were the spin on equivelent . I still use the 373's but they interere with my exuaste system

I bought my '68 C/10 Stepside w/L6 292 in 1973. It had the spin-on filter then. The PO could've changed it but I always assumed it was stock. I preferred the longer AC PF-35. Now I use a Wix 51061. When they're in a sideways orientation, you just can't pre-fill them like on a V8.

I know it's not truck related but the first spin on filter was on the chevy II nova first year of the v8 i believe 1964. The block is different than any other small block. The filter pad is cast about 3" higher up the side of the block for the clutch bellcrank linkage to run underneath the shorty filter. This was in conjunction with a chevy II specific bellhousing with the release lever indexed down to the ground more. You will never see a 1967 or older nova with a manual trans running anything but the nova specific block, or some bracket to make it work.

Grumpy jenkins loved the nova blocks and drag raced this block. I have an entire magizine from late 60's telling all the tidbits. He even bored a 283 out 120 thousands and never hit a water jacket.

I personally have owned 2 original v8 sport coupes (vin 116 code) and a 66 v8 4 speed wagon. A very good friend has collected more parts for 66-67 nova's than you would ever believe.

I had to chime in because my wife and i have 2 favorite vehicles, 68 c10's and 66-67 nova v8 coupes.

no , the spin on filters spin on...

the older style dont spin on. you insert the cartridge and theres a bolt that goes up through the center and that .i supose , is spun or screwed up into the block. you dont want the cartridge to spin or the housing to spin because it may damahe the o ring seal .

I know yo were joking but what if someone who owned fords read this....

We know they're out there somewhere lurkin'...
Case in point: FMC somehow acquired a fresh 292 L6 in late '62 or so and by sheer coincidence the Fu%d 300 "I-6" was born only 2 years later.

While not an expert on trucks, my 1959 Cadillac was the last year for the canister located under the hood. Then 1960 Cadillac had the spin on oil filters.

Not sure why the trucks would have been that much later.

But when you look on Rock Auto there still seems to be a few cartridges for sale that supposedly fit but very few choices. Most are the spin on type. Anyone know why that is?
