1972 C30 open road motor home!

There is a really nice olive green '72 C30 open road camper for sale on Portland craigslist. I went to look at it yesterday. To my surprise, my wife loved it! We couldn't get a great look because it was buried back in the shop. No battery, no propane tanks. The truck portion of it is perfect. 350/t400, black buckets (painted green). Tilt, tach, 68,000 miles.

The camper part is original. In decent condition. Couldn't test any of the appliances or plumbing. He says it's all good, works fine.

Asking price is $13,999. Too much money for us on it. FIRM on the $14k.
These things are hard to find info on. Mecum auctions sold one last month for $18,500. I see one on the board for sale from 2015 for $7,000.

Does anybody have one, or know of one in the NW? I would have brought $10,000 for that beast if we could test it out. I can't get the link to show up. Anybody out there know the ins and outs of these? Or even the shorter Mitchells? I hope I didn't low ball it.

From the outside it sure looks clean, but $14K? I don't know.

That's him. It's got ahold of my family. My two sons were up on the bunk above the cab. They're 6, and 8. The 6 year old was really pissed at me today after I told him we're not getting it. Even my wife was really let down. I just couldn't go above $10,000... I know I'd end up putting another $2,000 in it. He said he'll just keep it if nobody buys it. I'll save his number.

How about this one for $800? It needs work but leaves you lots in your bubget. https://cosprings.craigslist.org/cto/5619245442.html

Re: 1972 C30 open road motor home!

I wish it was closer! I can't imagine trying to tow that home.
It would be fun to rebuild the camper and make it my own. I wonder if it has the avocado green Coleman oven in it. That was about the coolest thing on the green one.

At this point I'm looking for one that is basically ready to camp. I've got my current truck project to finish before I start anything else. If there was one as good as the green one, with an owner that wanted to sell it, I'd fly over and drive it home.

This one's in the Bay Area, been listed a number of times:

This is a pretty cool Rv. They started with a 1970 Chevy c30 Dually pick up and in 1973 put a 22' traveltte Rv carriage on the back out of Sac. This Rv was kept in a car port that was built just for it. It's like a time capsule, everything is Origional and in great shape. The drive train has a 350ci engine and a turbo 350 trans so when your traveling it won't be so bad on gas, let me tell you, you almost can't tell the carriage is on the back. I added a Msd (GM blue 6a w-timming control plug), Msd hei billet distributor, and a 94amp alternator (internally regulated) The paint on the front end and the cab are near perfect for the age, inside the cab is immaculate, with no exaggeration! The paint is still smooth inside, the vinyl seat are Origional and near perfect. The carpet, glove box, dash pad, & center console all perfect. It does have a walk through to the carriage. The carriage is in great shape. It sleeps 4 comfortably with 2 queen beds 1 cab over, & 1 couch fold down. It has 2 water tanks unknown capacity and a water pump for non-hookup situation. There is a bathroom with shower. 1 hanger storage closet reasonable size. It had a small refrigerator in, but I changed it to a newer dometic freezer over frig. The eating area can seat 6. It has a 2 tub stainless sink with a fresh/filtered water hookup. There is still the old stainless chanteu oven over stove in it, stove works great the oven needs a new Rio stat switch. The water heater was replaced in the 90's and works great. The dual therm roof AC and heater just went out, blows hot but not cold. I went through and had a complete inspection done at camping world, I also installed a new inverter. Checked and fixed all water and gas leaks, all pluming and gas is safe, up to code, & without leaks. All electrical works and has been checked and fixed. It has ever been in an accident. Please call if you have any questions or an old classic Chevy 1973 & older of equal value you might want to trade. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED NOW IS THE TIME, I'M GETTING READY TO STRIP IT AND SCRAP THE REST!

If memory serves, it's a kind of Bronze exterior with Black interior, very nice original shape too. That one for $14K MUST be nice, as this one's in the top-5 cleanest I've seen. Good luck!

Re: 1972 C30 open road motor home!

If that green one is as nice as it looks and is as good as the seller claims, it may be cheaper in the long run than trying to fix up one that needs completely gone through. That camper stuff is not cheap to rebuild. I can't imagine getting either of the other 2 samples in this thread camping ready and looking nice for anything close to that $14k asking price. The family is going to want it to be nice inside and out.

Why don't you walk in there with $12,000. cash in your hand. It's easy to say no when you say $12,000. but not so easy to say no when you hold cash right in front of his face.

Re: 1972 C30 open road motor home!

If I were selling a motorhome, it would be all washed/waxed. Pulled out of the shop. 100% ready to leave for a camping trip. There would be beer/sodas in the cold refrigerator. I would offer one. I would let you wash your hands in hot water from the sink. You would try the shower, and flush the toilet. We would light the oven and cooktop. Turn the heater on.

Then I would drive it a few miles. Get it to 60mph. Go up a hill. Let go of the wheel and tap the brakes.

I would have a ladder to inspect the roof.

Then We would talk money. I'd start at $14k too.
If he had done that, I would have bought it. One way or another it would have been mine.
But I could tell he doesn't want to sell it. My theory is his wife wants it gone. There was a new travel trailer sitting in front of it. He probably agreed to sell the motorhome once he bought the trailer! Now it's "For sale" but not really.

Swiftshifter:
The pics from this site say the truck has a turbo 400 Trans. Craigslist ad truck says turbo 350. Either way thank you for the lead. I'm calling now.

...ahhhh!!! Bingo!
You might be in the driver's seat after all (..pardon the pun).
I love it when wives put husbands under pressure to sell some of their guy stuff....that makes it 'buyers market time', at least if you are strategic.
If you visit him again...wait until his wife is within earshot then make him an offer that she can hear.
OR call them up through the day when he is probably not around and talk briefly with his wife about your offer....this works like gangbusters in getting a deal.
If she hears that there is $10,000 in cash waiting in an envelope in the driveway....you'd be surprised what hits the sales lane...lol.

My two bits.

Coley:
That is hilarious! My wife says "let's look up his home phone and get his wife on." I laughed and pictured someone buying my stuff like that! Ouch.

Either way I'm waiting on pics from the one slick shifter posted. Me and the wife might finally get to use our Alaska air miles!

Those are the same trucks! This one is nice. Not nearly as nice as the green one. It's missing a lot of the little details that make the green so cool. Back sliding doors with a fold down deck is the best part! That and the avocado green appliances.

I got a lead on a really nice open road (with the back deck/sliding glass) about 45 minutes from me. I've found quite a few nice ones. Just not close enough. If I get one I would want to drive it home. I've never driven farther than Idaho!

I would love to buy one of these in great condition. If you really love it make him a better offer than 10000. Your wife already wants it that's the hardest part of any old truck deal. If the camper is all good that's the other hardest part. If the trucks that nice with low miles you know it will be better than anything you can buy that's been made since.

You're right. I'm going to call him this week. I have never seen my wife get interested in anything like this. She has been searching for more of them! If he will pull it out, and get everything working, I will buy it.
It will be mine! Oh yes.... It will be mine.:bann:

I guess a good deal doesn't always involve paying less than something is worth. If I do buy this motorhome, I guarantee my kids will ask to borrow it once they have families of their own.
I say again: it will be mine!

Update:
I said it would be mine. I really meant that. I really really wanted it to be mine...

$12,000 later it's mine!!! More than I wanted to give for it. Less than he wanted to get for it. I drove it home. Honestly one of the coolest things on 6 wheels in the US. It runs better than any carbureted engine I've seen. It's got a few minor flaws I plan to address. Nothing hard or too expensive. Everything works, and works well. Thank you very much to Gary for taking such good care of it for over 30 years! I couldn't be more excited, my kids are crazy about it, even my wife loves it!Attachment 1556402
More pics and maybe a thread just for it. Anyone else in the US have one like it? We searched and searched. This thing is a 9.5/10 perfect original motorhome.

that kind make the one the guy bought in ND for 2700 delivered seem cheap.
