Bell housing question
 

I have a 1969 C10 that we are switching from Inline 6 to V8. I had a question on the manual tranny bell housing.

Do I need the bell housing with the rear mount pads? I have seen aluminum bell housings that do not have that mounting surface.

The tranny is a Saginaw 4 speed out of my friend's 1969 Camaro.

No, the only ones I have seen use those were on my 56 210

If you already have the factory crossmember under the bellhousing you could run a rear mount bellhousing with the 4-speed. That is how a manual V-8 truck would have come in 1969.

If you do not already have that crossmember, I would pick up an aluminum bellhousing and install a generic transmission crossmember under the tailhousing of the 4-speed.

Thank you for the info. Bone stock truck with crossmember. So I will source a bell housing with the mount.

If you are going to use the bell housing trans mounts the cross member for the bell housing mounts are different for the I6 and V8.

Here are a few more pictures of the 6 vs 8 manual trans cross member . I did this conversion on my 67 short bed frame to mount the 350 v8 in the correct position . :chevy:


the V8 cross member is on the left with picture of the V8 engine perches . changing cross members with the cab on the frame is tough . You can drop a small block in using most of the 6 parts and a lot of guys do to avoid all the extra work and a bunch of new parts to do a correct 6 to V8 conversion install .

If I were swapping an L6 truck to small block I would keep it in the 6 cylinder position. That should give a better weight balance to the truck and also allow for a shorter driveshaft if going one piece.

On top of that it is a lot less work than removing rivets and finding donor parts. As mentioned above, it would appear different than a factory optioned V8 truck.
