Fauxtina Question
 

I have a 66 C10 that was already done in black primer. It has oxidized a bit. My thoughts were to create a fauxtina look. Has anyone raddle canned and sanded down to original paint (through primer) before? I think the original paint is that blue green color. I was gonna raddle can black paint over the primer and sand down on edges, etc. for a different look... Thoughts?

The factory didn't use the same color primer from bumper to bumper. The beds had black primer underneath, while the doors, front fenders and hood were red primer.

I see fauxtina jobs that were done pretty well, and others not so well. The factory original paint jobs that patina'd weren't always worn down on the fender tops and on all of the exposed edges. Our trucks were painted by humans on the assembly line, and oftentimes, you will see where the painter went "light" on the paint because that will be the first area to wear down. You see it a lot on the hoods, where one side will be patina'd and the other side won't. I have a spot on my passenger door where you can see the painter's spray pattern, and everything around it is thin and worn down.

Just do some research, and look at some original patina'd trucks on this site, and you'll see what I mean.

Thanks for the information! It seems it might be easier to add layers of paint and then sand.

The bed of my '65 was primered Black, so I wet sanded (don't remember the grit) it all off and was happy with the dull finish of the paint below the primer. In doing so, I sanded through some of the paint (by accident) to the primer beneath that. I need to sand some more and even out the primer spots to give a more realistic look, but I am very happy with the results so far. I'd say to wet sand an area of the Black primer and you may be very please with what you find. Here you can see how the bed looks like faded paint, but the tailgate and cab still have a gloss. When I get around to it, the entire truck will have a uniform faded appearance.
