general purpose paint/stain sprayer

.
I've got a staining job at the house needs to be completed. My plan was to use a brush but after an hour of that yesterday, I've decided to invest in a pneumatic sprayer to spray in on instead.

In this case I have a non-oil based stain ( Val-Spar from Lowes ) that I want to run through a gun of relatively low cost, say under 100 bucks. But, I also want to use this gun later for painting other things like interior rooms and car stuff in the shop.

Being a total nube when it comes to spraying paint from anything other than a rattle can, I'm looking for some advise about spray guns.

My compressor is a 30 gallon 5 SCFM @90 PSI.

Can you guys recommend a general purpose gun that would fit my need here?

Thanks,

I keep a couple of the Harbor Freight HVLP guns on hand and they will get the material sprayed. They are 9 bucks when you get them on sale, so I see that as pretty much disposable. Can I recommend them for interior paint? I've never tried it... I think for staining a deck it would be fine... it would be way faster for sure. You can always spray an area then roll it out to get better penetration. God luck!

Rent an airless spray gun , no compressor needed and less over spray ,and you don't have to store it or make an investment to use the right tool . :chevy:

I painted about 60ft of fence with one of those purple Harbor Freight HVLP guns. Connected a couple lengths of air hose together and ran it straight from my compressor. I twisted the air cap 90 degrees to change the spray pattern and made about 2 or 3 passes up and down on the fence, just like Mr. Miyagi taught me. I didn't use a roller after.

I used about 4 gallons of stain to do both sides of the fence. very little overspray around the fence. After I was done I just threw the gun away rather than clean it. 3 years later fence still looks great.

Thanks guys. Considered renting but wanted to come away with something I can continue to use.

Today I got a coupon for the purple HVLP gun for 10 bucks. Can't really beat that. Gonna be testing it soon.

There really isn't a gun that will do both correctly. For spraying rooms with latex and or solid stain an airless is best.

Doing car parts even with the so called hvlp purple gun a small compressor won't work well. Doing small stuff like brackets and such it may. But you will run into a problem with moisture. A small compressor will run continuously and really heat up the air. Hot air holds moisture ya you can get a separator but that only works with actual water not vapor. Now when your spraying all that hot air comes out a 1.4 mm orifice when that happens the vapor turns to water and contaminates the paint.

And I have several purple guns but there for epoxy and high build primer. For high build I drilled out the gap to just about 2mm. Spraying paint I use a devilbiss teckna pro light .

I'm a retired house painter. You can get a spray gun that has the cuo on the bottom to use for the stain. BUT clean it out good when finished.

Or get one of the Wagner spray guns from wallyworld or lowes. They have a wider spray pattern. I've used both in the past.
