Awesome fabrication skills in this, blending Yukon floor pan makes this a Great family hauler. Looks great in primer, only going to get better.

Body is off the frame & I am seam sealing the undercarriage to get it ready for undercoating. Frame is being prepped for paint as well. Body of the truck is ready for its second prime. Getting closer!

Floor is primed & seam sealed. Ready for spray in sound deadening. We use a product called VB1X from Cascade Audio Engineering. Second prime is done & ready to block sand for final paint. Frame is stripped & ready to paint. Slowly but surely it's moving along!

Wow! What a massive undertaking! Very impressive mods, and great attention to detail! If I get down your way I'd also enjoy stopping in and seeing your Burb in person!

Don't know if you're stoked, but I am! Good times, getting the kids to work.

1971BB427, You can stop by anytime. It would give me some motivation to keep going on this thing! When I am working on somebody elses car I am spending their money. Spending my own $ on parts is killing me :-)

LOW ELCO, I am definitely stoked when my son helps me out. It's been a family project. My father-in-law has done a ton of work on this thing (he does the fab work in my shop) and he is teaching my son to weld. My son really loves working with his grandpa & is learning a great life long skill. He helped out a bit on the rear floor mod. I think roughly 10 out of the 1000 welds are his :-).

Re: Project 70 Yellow Turd

A few problems today. I installed the new POL motor mounts and tried to mount my 396 with Hooker headers. The headers hit the lower control arms. Im going to have to do some drilling tomorrow to move the motor back. Hoping it doesnt push the motor back into the firewall. I guess i have to re-mount the body on to the frame to make sure. Is this a common problem on big block installs?

Re: Project 70 Yellow Turd

Since no one else has commented on this, I do believe there is a difference in the firewalls on the bigblock vs. smallblock . Similar to the high and low hump issues for 4wd vs. 2wd trans. covers. Sadly, I have one of each type suburban's, but It would take a bit of effort on my part to measure or get photos. Maybe do a search at the top. Anyone else want to chime in?:metal:

Re: Project 70 Yellow Turd

No, the firewalls are the same for SBC or BBC trucks and Suburbans. There are different motor mounts for the two engines that situate the motor higher or lower, so be sure the motor mounts you have are for a BBC.

Re: Project 70 Yellow Turd

I agree, firewalls are the same. 2 wheel drive big block and small block motor mounts and stands are different (4X4 is different and no big blocks standard). You must use the forward most holes in the frame for the big block. Big block stands and mounts are available in the aftermarket.
Sander headers fit great.

I mounted the body to the frame to check & everything clears just fine. Thanks for the input!

Re: Project 70 Yellow Turd

OK, so it's time to give an update on this project. We had a lot of snow & ice here this winter so our shop has been pretty dang busy. The Suburban got put on the back burner while I actually used the space to fix PAYING CUSTOMER jobs!!! ;) We are still pretty busy but...I want my burb at least painted so I can get it back home to finish it off. The body is blocked out & seam sealed so the plan is to paint the firewall & roof 1st by the end of this week. I then will re-mask & paint the rest of the body the beginning of next week. The paint is called Ace of Spades black & is a premium custom color from Planet Color. It's basically a three stage black. The base color is straight black toner. You then add a clear mid coat with a special reflective additive over the black. This will add about another 1.5 feet of reflectiveness off the black which in turn gives it that deeeeeeeeeep look. Clear coat is then added like usual & voila...a show truck is born...or at least is painted :metal:

No, I haven't painted it yet :-) Life keeps getting in the way! I am going with a different center console though. This one is out of a 2009 Suburban & will require a bit more fab work on the dash. The original one I was going to use was out of a Ford Explorer & I never liked the idea of a FORD product going in my burb :-) The suburban one just makes more sense. It's a bit on the wide side of things but a small seat shift out will do the trick. I cant decide if I want to fab the metal on the dash or build out a fiberglass insert to make a smooth transition. The console area has been a major brain fart for me on this project. I just cant make my mind up!
