I was trying to remember as it was a few years ago on my 71 4wd that I pulled the small block and dropped in a 454 and just had to use big block mounts as they were a bit taller and still ran the big distrib, but you never know what someone else does to modify something before you get it. The frame mod is easy if you can weld.

Got the 396 66 chevelle oil pan on and it solved my problems. For anyone who looks at this thread later down the road, I used stock sbc motor mounts that came with the frame, and a 396 66 oil pan with no trouble, i have about 1/4 inch of clearance. I did move the stock crossmember forward 2 inches to help with any firewall clearance i might have also so i can use a factory square body front driveshaft.

Starting to make forward progress. Also the boyd welding fuel tank came in.

Im doing the same thing got to love the Monday morning quarter backs .Why are you doing it ?I would do it like this or that .Dude its yours and thats what you want is the only why that matters .My truck has a lot of sentimental value too and the body wont take months of body work.Cant wait to see yours done !

Its been awhile guys, I have been busy putting 1 ton axles in my wheeler an 78 dodge power wagon. But im back it it now. Yesterday I got my trans crossmember modified to work with the 241 transfer case so the front shaft wont hit now. Today I tore apart the front shaft and installed new u joints, and also finally cut my plug wires to length and crimped on the ends, man that was the first time I built my own wires and what a pain in the rear.

On a side nit can someone post a pic of how the front u joint attaches to the dana 44 yoke. Is it u bolt straps or is it strapswith bolts. Thanks in advance

Depends on your diff, one is threaded for the bolts and straps, the othere yoke isn't threaded so the u bolt will pass rt threw. Just have a look to see if threaded or not to see the type.

So if i cut the rivets that hold the factory bell housing crossmember thats what you are using for a transmission crossmember?

The crossmember he is using is the factory auto trans/4 speed crossmember. The bellhousing crossmembers were only for the three-on-the-tree trucks.

If you look in post 40 my crossmember was silver in those pics

Well today i got the rear ends swapped out......... sorta. I guess the 2 and 4wd spring perch width is different? Csn anyone verify this? i managed to get the 4wd one in the 2wd frame by ratchet strapping the springs closer together, which is fine because its going to scrap once i get the body off, however i wantto do the 4wd correctly.

So i started to grind off all the old perches and bump stop brackets on my 2wd axle. Got about half way then it started to rain so i had to pull the corvette in, and i wasnt about to grind right next to it.

So few questions.
2wd vs 4wd spring perch width, different or did the po just screw up mine when he did his homemade axle flip?

Where can i buy spring perches to weld on?

What should the pinion angle be when i weld on my new perches?

Anyone know where i can buy and angle gauge to determine pinion angle? Link?

The spring perches on 2WD vs. 4WD are different. I think the 4WD perch width is like 40" where the 2WD is like 42 1/2" or something. I ran into this a while back on my 4wd build. As far as the pinion angle I measured mine while it was bolted up to the springs before I cut the perches off. Then I bolted the axle up with new perches, centered the axle, set the pinion angle, then welded them onto the axle. I bought a magnetic angle gauge from harbor freight and it works just fine.

4x4 = 40.5" spring perch. Swapped my 72 Ho52 for a Dana60 from 71. Bolted right up.

Awesome guys so i d 4x4 is 40.5 can anyone confirm what 2wd are, so i can take the difference and move them that much. Its hard to get an accurate measurement with the pumpkin in the way

Does anyone with a 4x4 rear mind take a tape measure to there diff for me? I need a measurement of where the tube slides into the pumpkinout to the center pin of the leaf perch.

From where the tube slides into the pumpkin to the middle of spring perch is right at 12". Hope this helps. Trevor

Got the new perches tacked in and test fitted, tomorrow ill pull it clean it and paint it, providing i can figure out what im gonna do with shock mounts
