4x4 Hubcaps why are they different?

2 Attachment(s)
I found a couple different sets of 4x4 hub caps today. I noticed the cap on the left is raised like it was meant to cover a wider axle where the cap on the right is flat like the 2wd applications BUT both caps have centers stamped out for the 4x4 front axle from the factory.

Why are they different? What application(s) would they go to?

One on left is for Dana 60 1 ton
Fairly pricey when you find them

One on right is standard 1/2-3/4ton cap

If so, why is it the five-spoke hubcap for a 15" rim? The Dana 60 would never have been paired with a 15" rim.

I was under the impression that the 15" rims got the five spoke hubcap. The 16" rims got the six spoke hubcap. The six-spokes intended for the dana-60 had a larger hole than the ones destined for the 10-bolt/dana-44.

Good question...I didnt even pay any attention to it being a 5 spoke cap..
I do know those raised centers were a 1ton d60 thing
.maybe it's a GMC thing for the one on the left if his pic..
Puzzling is the one on the right with 5 spokes and a hub hole

While I can't tell you why there are two different styles- neither of those shown are 3/4 or 1 ton versions- those have 6 spokes and measure 12" in diameter.
This site shows both styles you have - https://www.hubcaps.org/chevtruck.html

Heres a snip from the parts catalog; #6 is is the cap you're looking at and it shows several versions for Chevy only or GMC only and the part number changed throughout the years too.

thats NOT a dana 60 hub cap front . the center portion next to the hole is to FAT . it needs to be almost paper thin and rolled over .

i have a pair on my 1 K30 truck :smoke:

Its for a 1/2 ton much smaller diameter than the ones on my K20

Just a guess, but it seems like my grandfathers 78’ with full time hubs had the necked one, my 80 with lock outs had the flush ones. Could it be the smooth capped full time hubs had the necked ones?

I have a dana 60. I have a dozen 6 spoke caps and none of them fit the Dana 60. I need a set of Dana 60, 6 spoke caps. Help this brother out.

Some of you guys need your eyes checked... those are clearly 1/2 ton caps.

But to answer your question, i'm 99% sure the ones on the right were on trucks with NP203 cases. The ones on the left came on 1/2 tons with 205 cases and ALL 81+ trucks. Since trucks with lockouts or 81+ autohubs stuck out further, they have the left version.

Seems like I read somewhere that the 5-spoke caps were for 1/2 tons and the 6-spokes were for 3/4 ton. My K20 has the 6-spoke caps on (EDIT) -> 16" rims which I assume are original...

While I cannot say for sure, I believe the ones on left with neck, were on later 1/2 ton. I had a 76 K1500 when it was near new, with full time hubs, and it had the style on right (actually still have the caps off that truck). Seems like 77 or 78 they went with those

Thank you, this is the type of answer that I was looking for!
