Right rear locking up
I just replaced a leaky wheel cylinder on that wheel and its locking up way earlier than the others. I checked the adjustment and theres no drag at all on the drum, which normally i would think it should be adjusted tighter because theres no drag. If theres still air in the line wouldnt that make a mushy pedal? Its not mushy at all. Any ideas or suggestions?

Re: Right rear locking up
Did you change the linings? Brake fluid soaked shoes will cause grabby brakes

Re: Right rear locking up
What he said. You can salvage the linings by spraying brake cleaner on them, or Easy-Off, to dissolve the grease. We used to dip greasy shoes in the hot tank, which is lye, like Easy-Off, after replacing rear wheel bearings.

Re: Right rear locking up
I did spray the linings pretty good with brake clean, but based on what yall are saying, i may go back and replace the shoes.

Re: Right rear locking up
I've driven with my parking brake on for short periods to burn off the brake fluid in the shoes.

Re: Right rear locking up
Gear oil leaking past the axle seal can run down onto the brake shoes and cause wheel lock up also.

Re: Right rear locking up
I don't know.....seems to be a GM thing. I've had SEVERAL through the years do it. Just bleed everything again.

Re: Right rear locking up
You need to replace the shoes. You cannot get the fluid or grease out of the linings. It may work for a while but the heat is going to bring it out again. I've sanded them down with sandpaper & again it didn't last.

Re: Right rear locking up
I never try to clean brake shoes. For the money it’s not worth it

Re: Right rear locking up
I had that problem once ( brake locking up in the rear on one side) it turn out to be the brake shoes were reversed when replaced, oops.

Re: Right rear locking up
I don't understand why anyone would try and reuse brake shoes that have had brake fluid on them. There cheep! Would you really risk wreaking your truck over $25.00 for brake shoes.

Re: Right rear locking up
I bought a C10 once and the left rear kept locking up. Turns out the previous owner had installed a right hand adjuster on the left side.
I know this probably isn't your problem but I thought I would put it here in case someone else has brakes locking up. |
Re: Right rear locking up
There's always the collapsed line too... But usually that means it won't release at all. Again for anyone else reading along.

Re: Right rear locking up
I have seen rear brakes lock from not being adjusted enough. I think the shoe comes out at high presure or something.
