Chrysler A904 trans behind a SBC 350???

1 Attachment(s)
Hey Guys,

I just picked up a sweet 70' K10 that had been sitting for a few years. Checked all the boxes for me. Original short bed descent shape etc. The PO has put TBI on a 350 which is fine for now (has some minor issues) After getting it home and crawling around I noticed the engine is backed by a Chrysler A904 Torqueflight transmission. Any idea the benefit of doing this? Ive read a few things online about it being done in some off-road forums but not sure if this was commonplace in the 70s or 80s. Does anybody have info on this setup?

Nice pic of the truck but a pic of the trans and how it bolts up would help a lot.

Bolts right up to the block no adapters from what I can tell. I haven't ventured outside to work on the truck today... 112 in Phoenix.

Likely a turbo 350.
Pan looks the same.

No Chrysler transmission will bolt directly to an SBC without an adaptor, bolt pattern isn't even close.. Check again. Probably a TH350 or possibly a TH400. Post pictures of the installation.

Look familiar? This is a pic I am posting as an example of a TH350.

It seems the 904 went behind iron dukes. So it is a easy swap to use a Dana 300 transfer case too. Which is almost as good as a 205. Or it.parts the guy had.

That A904 tag appears to be a rebuilder's tag that was added otherwise it looks like a GM transmission

It is.
This is a picture as an example of a TH350 drivers side view - and his pic of the alleged 904:

Man you guys are good. After counting the pan bolts i'm on board with the fact that its a turbo 350 trans. I guess googling numbers on the side of the case doesn't always work out.

It's not original to the truck as it's a THM 350 heavy case used on later 4x4's.
They did it right. If it's missing the converter cover it takes a solid aluminum cover with two bolts at the bottom of it that attach rods that extend up to the motor mounts.
Nice truck BTW.

This flange is flat on the standard case.
The 4x4 has the bolt bosses on the flange for the heavy duty aluminum converter cover.
Pictured is the standard case. It requires a plastic or stamped steel converter cover.
