Throttle linkage question

I just put a 4bbl intake/carb on my Apache’s 283 engine. I feel that the gas pedal doesn’t have a lot of travel with the thickness of insulation and rubber floor mat.
Has anyone added length to the rod under the gas pedal for this? Im thinking this would help to give me more travel and a better throttle response. I just need an extra rod to have just in case I screw this one up and to return to stock. Does anyone sell this part without the rest of the throttle linkage ? Thanks |

You can also move the stud at the carburetor closer to the pivot point for the throttle and accomplish the same thing.

I'd give it a go as is and see if you feel it needs more throttle/speed than it is going to provide. Simply meaning that I wouldn't fix it unless I saw that i honestly needed fixing. Then if you feel that you aren't getting the most out of it when you floor it and go though the gears go ahead and fix it.
I'd rather move the contact point on the lever on the carb than lengthen the rod to the pedal as that will put your foot at a less than fun angle. |

I wouldnt lengthen the rod from the pedal to the carb. I tried it and it wasnt good.
I lowered the upper pivot point on the pedal link about 1/4". made a world of difference. |

It's best to look at the linkage as a system before making changes. Try to make sure the link, the larger piece of steel that the rods attach to, is as close to 90 degrees to both rods as possible. This could mean moving a pivot or attachment point and changing the length of one or more rods. Bellcranks can "over center" and with a throttle linkage the result can be very fast throttle opening when it is not wanted. I've driven vehicles with this issue. Sometimes they are very hard to control.
