Slick off the cowl vent

I've read that you need to cut out the old cowl vent and then butt weld in the patch so it won't show through the paint. I've also heard to just use the old vent top plate and weld it in.

What is the right way to do this?

Thanks.

I purchased an oversized vent cover to weld in.

If you reuse the old vent cover then your gonna have a big gap to fill, not to mention the radius edges...would be better off making a oversized patch and butt weld it in..like crossfire said

I'd at least buy the panel that they sell to fill it with rather than try to weld in the vent. I have to agree that finishing it off so it didn't show would be pretty hard. Probably the best way would be to cut the area around the vent out and make a patch that can be butt welded in just as you would butt weld in any other filler patch in. A section cut out of donor panel from an AD truck might be best rather than one cut from a piece of new sheet metal. Most of us have a throw away door hood or some other piece around that we could cut a patch out of and have the same thickness and alloy makeup of the cowl panel .

A previous owner filled mine. Can't see it from outside at all - and I have a pretty trained eye.
