8.2 gm detoit diesel ?

how are these ? i found a whole truck i can use for a build project and its got one in it with a allison at545 auto . its a 1990 model and has 76k miles on it and was a 1 owner local truck its whole life . no major highway time . had a flatbed on it for hauling bulk bailed cardboard or crushed soup cans for a recycle yard .

any feedback would be great thanks .

if there junk even in there best days i have time before its needed to swap it to a gas engine . would i need a different trans adapter plate ? never seen in person a 8.2 to know what bell pattern the block has on the back .

this would be used as a local haul truck for my new job i have in the works and no real super heavy stuff or hard life .

The turbo'ed versions blew head gaskets constantly. The non-turbo versions were fairly reliable and got excellent fuel economy but had no power. Rated around 165 H.P. if I remember right. They used a unit injection system similar to the 2 strokes. Very difficult to tune and required a lot of special tools to do so. Parts are getting tough to find, don't bother Detroit Diesel for help. Rebuildable cores pretty much gone too. On the bright side 1990 was the last year they were made, and the later versions were supposed to be better. I think they had a standard SAE bell housing but I don't remember if it was a #1 or #2 (just looked, someone on the internet says #2). Not the same as a gas engine.

Ahh, the ol' "fuel pincher" at least that's what the series emblem said.
A school buddy had a C-70 bucket truck with one for his tree service business.
He started it in the A.M. and would let it run all day till the work day was done, believed it had starting issues

As I have mentioned before in this forum. I had to drive a N/A version in the 80's with a 5 and 2. It had a 26ft box on it hauling candy and tobacco products. It was aggravating to say the least. I was constantly in the way when the speed limit was 55mph. Poor excuse for a Detroit. It got around 10 mpg also.

8.2 was a 4 cycle, came out around 1980 when everyone was looking for economy and low cost of ownership. OK for 2 or 3 ton trucks with light loads. Parts will be hard to find, but, with 76K, it should have a lot of life left in it.
