FNG 72 K5 CST Project

First post here, the names Ryan and I am by far no mechanic and have zero fabrication skills, just here to learn as I go, Slowly.

Back story on the Blazer...

This 1972 Blazer was my Grandfather's that he bought brand new. The original paperwork is still in the glove box!:metal: Then my Dad took it over and it sat in his driveway covered and sometime in a garage for 10-15 years. My dad was never and mechanical guy and never tried to get it going again. One day it blew power steering fluid everywhere because a line was cut and got all over the belts and wouldn't start. He was late for work, so got a ride then it end up covered in our driveway for a couple years. Then moved to a garage until I told him finally I'm taking it and getting it running.

As far as he knows it's the original 350 rebuilt with low miles. But not sure on the exact mileage. The gas tank has been pulled by me years ago when it had a crack and I was a dumb kid and didn't know what I was doing, I did have the piece of mind to drain it and wash it out.

I drained the oil and replaced it. It was black but nothing bad coming out if there.

So it begins as they say. I'm looking forward to hopefully getting some advice and help along the way from you fellers. Anyway sorry the for the long post, but here she is with the top pulled on jack stands and some other work so far:

Looks like a great Blazer. It is very cool that it is a "one family" Blazer that will touch 3 generations.

Looks good Ryan and great story. Be careful with that torch, you cut through a pretty valuable 4x4 only manifold. Good luck with the project. Trevor

Welcome to the forum and great blazer to start with. Awesome that it has been in the family for so long. I wish I would have kept my original K5. I traded my dad for it to keep him from selling it but ended up having to sell it a few years later for financial reasons. Keep us posted on the progress.

Hey thanks man, but I have to say, the manifold ripped out like that when I was trying too unbolt it from the exhaust. I think there was a leak and it burned up. But yeah, it just crumbled on it's own. I do still have the other side.... Valuable you say? Hmmm I do need funds for this beast.:ito:

My bad, it looked like it had been torched in the center. I wasn't trying to rude, just trying to help ya along. You will find certain things are 4x4 specific on your ride, and I would hate to see you damage them as sometimes the specific items can be sold for good profit to fund other items during the build or cannot be bought back very easily. Trevor

If you don't want A/C, don't just rip it out. If it's a complete system, sell it! The whole thing! The whole setup can sell for $350 to $450. There are some folks out there that still want original. Or piece it out.... just be careful that you don't damage anything.

Ok, I didn't plan on just ripping it out. But I actually don't what goes to what if you know what I mean. I'm a noob. I just want to know what each part is, and what to take off, what to plug ect.

You don't have to remove or plug anything else to make it run. It'll be fine as is, as long as the heater hoses are good and connected to the engine.

My point was that you could make a few bucks by trying to sell it instead of tossing it out.

Hmmm I think for now I'll pull what I can off and keep it for later.

Nice starting point. But do me a favor and turn your hard top over! You will get a permanent large dent in the top of that double wall if it stays like that. I'm not trying to be a d*ck, just want you to have a nice looking top when you go to put it back on. Good luck with the build and keep posting progress pictures.

I have since but it may have been to late. Still looks ok to me though. I took that thing off myself too, talk about a hernia. No damage though!

My thoughts exactly when I saw that top flipped over like that! Take care of your top, no matter what shape it is in. Welcome aboard and keep us posted of your progress!

Thanks man, I've had a few people tell me that, but that is something that will probably be a little later when I have more funds and knowledge.
