Headliner question
 

I thought I posted this on this board, but then I found it on the parts board...


What have you guys done with your headliners? My burb has the original hardboard, but I'd like to either do something with cloth or update it somehow. Short of that, is there a way to make the original one hang down less? Can it be glued to the roof?

I have a good friend that does Street Rod upholstery, and it seems to me that he did an early Suburban headliner a few years back.
I believe he used the original wavy hardboard as a template, and the new board was SHEET STYRENE.
Available through most custom upholstery shops in a variety of thicknesses. last 4'X8'X1/8" sheet I bought was around $40.00.

He "backsided" it with a good quality "peel and stick" sound deadener, (the actual roof) and covered the outside with the same material found in late model GM cars and trucks.
It's relatively cheap, and widely available. In all GM colors, too!

It looks nice with the stock seats, or with late model upgraded seats.
The"bows" I believe, were custom brushed stainless with Oak inserts.
You might consider adding a couple of extra bows, if there are additional inner cross braces to attach to, as these headliners are heavy and not supported too well originally.

You might check some of the later GM vans for sunvisors in the same matching material, too!

Oh, BTW, I highly recommend some sort of insulation between the roof and 'liner. COOL CAR (KOOLMAT?) makes some good stuff.
It will definitely make your A/C work less!!

My blue indoor/outdoor carpeting worked well!:D

I hung a 4 x 8 sheet of 1/4" luan, fixing it with tech screws every 18" tapping into the cieling frame struts. Still need to figure how to make the compound curve at the cieling edge/ window pillar top joist junction. Still a work in progress.

Anyone have some pictures of these set-ups? My truck doesn't even have the hard board. What should I use?

I was thinking of maybe masonite?

there are like 3 or 4 pics on the route 66 pictures i posted like 3 threads, its on one of them on the Picture forum

I really did not have a chance to take alot of though it was really sweet, Nice smoke gray woven tweed pattern with a vinyl/leather grayish looking parts over a/c unit and etc,

it was dash, all panels, corners of cab and bed seats, flooring and ceiling all same pattern.
