Laid down good! BTDT= Been there, Done That. I always go bc/cc because something ALWAYS goes bad. Easy fix, a little sandy sandy, it's all good! Like I say, I'm a so so painter, but a HELL of a polisher. Long as I can halfway get it on right, it's all good! Like I said, just relax. Know things are gonna go in the crapper, and be calm when they do. It'll all be good, in the end. You've made the first jump off the cliff, it's all downhill from here!

Oh yeah, git to the pawn shop! How the hell ya gonna paint without ZZtop and Foghat blasting? That just ain't American!

I think your problem with the orange peel is either too low of air pressure or the paint is to thick. I know we all want it to cover in 1 coat but 2 or 3 thin coats work better and wait for the paint to flash or it will run from the wet build up. I went to this site and they will answer your painting questions. http://www.autobody101.com/content/

Thanks for more good advice! I'll get a few better pics today after work. Wifey and I always go down to the tav for Monday Night Football, so prolly no truck time today. I work down here in the hood, so there's about ten pawn shops within five blocks! I'm going to look on my lunch hour.

If I put expoxy down, let it flash then hit it with hi-build, think I can let that sit for a while before I sand it and topcoat it or should I do the BC/CC right away?

Nope, let the epoxy dry good. Scuff with red scotchbrite and shoot paint. Scuff with 150 of going to slick sand. It needs tooth like Bondo does.

I think you're right there FrankieD. After I bumped the pressure up a little things went a lot better, but WAY too fast! I wanted to thin the paint some but wasn't sure if I could reduce it with laquer thinner??? The good news is that it layed down pretty good and I'm done with that color (well, almost). I think I'm going to follow Elco's advice and use a BC/CC for the pretty stuff. Thanks for chiming in!!

Them buggers are PROUD of the junk they've got laying around!!! Too rich for my blood. Couple decent Yamaha's, but $100 and its missing the volume knob!? Found a craigslist jewel and am waiting for a call-back.

Thanks again guys! I'm convinced - BC/CC it is. Now, what product specifically???? The Boy gets a decent student discount through NAPA so I'm thinking that. What would you pay for a gallon of color (with the stuff) and a gallon of clear (with the stuff). They have all sorts of different products! What to get!? Plan is to epoxy everything. I'll paint right on that in places that I ain't gonna block, but I'll let it cure first then scuff it with the pad. As for body panels and such, don't you think a hi-build and more sanding will be worth the time??? I know you can't see my handy work, but it's pretty damn smooth (P180).

Got home today and pulled the wheels outta the fun-dome. They look pretty damn sweet to me! Tiny bit of orange peel, but nothing I'm gonna squirm over. The Boy will mount and balance on Wednesday! The first few parts I sprayed look like a$$. Underside of one inner is gonna have to be what it is, cuz I don't really give a rat's arse about under there. Front side of the rad support is also kinda crappy, but same deal. One topside of an innner is probably too ugly for me to swallow tho. I'll sand that sucker and re-coat.

Things look great and your gettin it on. Great Plastic House !
On my make shift booth I have an air inlet with a furnace filter vent. Basically a square hole to allow clean air in while dirty air gets sucked out. I use a squirrel cage with the motor on the outside. The squirrel fan is away from the booth and connected to 2 10' pieces of 4" plastic pipe(Home depot garden center). Try to keep the fumes away from any ignition source(electric motor). Maybe a bit overkill but I ain't never been blowed up.

Thanks Bomp! I don't want blowed up neitha! Ya know, I got a fire burning like 10' away from the fun-dome. How common is the big huff!? It's got me a little worried now....:devil:

I'm also a bit concerned with the temp swing we've got going. It's just going to get worse too. If I get the metal and paint up to 60 degrees, then spray, keep it there for a few hours but then it gets down to freezing overnight.... Is that gonna suck? I wanna get this beotch painted so I can spend the winter putting it all together!

you should be ok with the temps as long as you keep the temp up for a few hours after you spray. I've had cc lay out real smooth when its cold. it can take a little longer to be ready for cut and buff though. also paint fumes near open flame or spark are all about ppm. if you dont have a fog of fumes goin on near fire or sparks, you will be fine.

For temps, I generally crank a propane heater (Mr. Heater) while I prep and get it as hot as possible, then blow the doors 1/2 way and hit the fans while I base, all the way while I clear, keep 'em open while I clean guns, then close up and flip the heat back on. I'm kinda paranoid of the sparky. On Yeller, I used Nason epoxy primer ($80 1/2 gal) Slick Sand Primer ($75 gal.) Dupont Chromabase (around $300/gal, but mixes 1/1, so 1 gal of color + 1 gal of reducer will almost do a whole truck) and Nason Clear ($140/gal.) I like Bomp's plan for venting. BTW, Bomp, you are KILLING me with your name! I had to blast Pantera all the way to work and I STILL have that damn doo-wop song in my head, and I HATE doo-wop! Well played, sir! Go to Napa and see what they carry. Lotta times they can get stuff they don't show. If your're just gonna paint bare metal parts with no sanding, you can hit it with Nason etch prime ($40/half gal.) let it dry a bit and scuff with scotchbrite and base/clear or whatever straight over it. Works great. Just get the gun in your hand and remember what Mike Lavallee (the originator and King of Truefire and a damn nice guy) says, "It's just paint. If it goes bad, I can sand it off and do it over. It's just paint."

Been thinking about a better ventilation system. I'll have to go see what Pa has in his shed for squirrel cage fans. I've got a bunch of 4" flexy tubing left over from my retaining wall project. I'll also run down to the Napa paint store today at chow (if I can get away) and see what they recommend. Last time I was in there it seemed that they didn't have much patience for the amature painter.

Thanks Mike! One buddy says pinstripe another thinks trim rings, but I really like the plain-jane, poverty caps and a nice shiny balancing weight! With a little luck I'll be putting some color down on the cab this weekend!! So stoked! It's super motivating to see your bad ride come together. Man I wish I was big window - jealous!!!!

Your gettin it. I try to stay around 70* when I spray. My paint guy said that if I heat up the area with the paint and stuff(parts) in the same room. That way if I do have a drop in temp the part is still warm and so is the products inwhich I am using. The parts and paint are working with you (warm) and not against you(cold). An obvious thing but I would have never thought of it.

Thanks but...ah...I know who Pantera is but just can't place the song. My daughter was listening to KidRock and the Bomp-diddy-bomp song and....well........rest is history.

Got home today and knocked down all the crappy parts. Mixed up the last of my black and re-sprayed. MUCH better results, but still the paint is too thick and nuthin to reduce it with. I'll have to get a little more of that to do the underside of one inner and my vent window frames (thanks for reminding me John!!!). I'll prolly put one more coat on the topside of the inners while I'm at it. I followed some advice and left the shop vac off while I was spraying. I just left the fun-dome door cracked until it went dust free then opened her up with the roll up doors open. Let it clear out then lit a fire. One thing I still need to learn is the SLOW PART. I think half my battle is having too much $hit going on in there at once and I'm getting overspray on my nice stuff. How long will a mixed batch of urethane last? Seems like a waste to mix up small portions.

The Boy has my wheels and rubber loaded into the S10 and will get those mounted and balanced tomorrow. Pics to follow!!!!

Big Brown Santa showed today with the first load!!! :metal: This is the LMC stuff I ordered. The bulk of my stuff is coming from GMC Paul and should be here on Thursday. One of the outside handles has a big-o flaw so I'll be sending that sucker back to Taiwan.

The carpet kit is sweet and so are the '67 arm rests. Also got pretty much all new screws and washers to assemble the doors but they're hard to see in the photos.

Oh, and the craigslist deal on the tuner/amp fell thru. Still no damn tunes!!! Might just have to go take my phukin on that Yamaha tomorrow.

LMC customer service is stellar! Called about the blem in my door handle and in about 2 seconds they're sending me a new one. No questions asked and they don't even want me to send the old one back. They'll get my recommendation just for that! Thanks LMC!

Right on Johnny ! I called 'em last week about my mirrors that I ordered over a year ago. I had only checked everything for damage, and to make sure it was all there. got my mirrors out last week, and it sounded like there was loose bits rolling around between the mirror/chrome back. they looked up my order #, and sent a pair of new ones. no charge ! they didnt want the other ones back either.

After work I'll scrub all that blue soapy crap off the letters and throw them on for a look. Picutres of this thing OUTSIDE for ya'll by 6:00!
