Re: 1956 3100 build

Looks like you have some patience testing coming right up. Tack wait, tack wait. Should be awesome when done though.

Re: 1956 3100 build

haha, yeah, I know. been there on a few different things. should i do this differently? is there a better way? let me research this first. then. when all said and done, you tape off a line and grab a zip disc. took less time to do than it did to research. lol.
I use autobody tape a lot for stuff like making a line for zip disc cutting. it sticks pretty well and makes a good line to cut against. for the zip discs, actually I have switched to mostly the lennox metalmax disc. it is a steel blade with diamond embedded on the cutting surface so it doesn't get smaller as you cut and it doesn't periodically explode and leave shards under your skin for future reference. I usually cut the hole a little on the small side and then use my die grinder to custom fit a nice tight space for welding the new part in. panel clamps would work awesome on your project. clecos work well too. what I have done in the past is make a tight fitting panel, then where the clecos will go I simply make a little hole in the crack between the parts so the cleco will fit in. sometimes you need a small washer on the back side if it is accessible. then, as I'm sure you are well accustomed to, it is tack, tack, tack around the 4 sides till it's all stuck. then tack between those tacks and then more between those tacks until it is fully welded in. yup, time consuming to do it right so it doesn't warp. you been there. looking good too.

Re: 1956 3100 build

hey dsraven, i picked up some of those panel clamps during one of our last cross border shopping to bangor, maine a few years ago.they had them at harbour freight(USA version of princess auto) i miss the cross border shopping.

i achieved a good gap for welding took a break there. will start tacking into place tomorrwow. i used glove box door as a template . i had a local shop bend cost was like $50.00.

Re: 1956 3100 build

nice thinking on the home spun parts. I like it. are you using panel adhesive or spot welding or a combination?

56 3100 10-18-2021 09:32 PM

Re: 1956 3100 build

thanks jean-marc. we have you cold weather here now! i have been gathering parts for truck since i bought it in 1995 i figured it was time to start the build. it was fun to drive stock for a couple years with the pitina look?(right spelling). you could see massy ferguson on bottom of door faded in. some plumbing company name could be seen in another spot. what was funny is someone using drivers side inner roof for records. it had the amount of wolves and grass hoppers someone might have saw/counted plus acouple of oil change dates written in as well. i am waiting on a pair of rear fender tubs that would finish out the bed of truck . flange on tubs match bed stips when using wood bed.

Like the 2 narrow indentations on those wheel tubs, as they match the TF bed sides. Unfortunately, can't find any aftermarket ones for a 66- Suburban. Jim
