anybody ever used doug thorley exhaust? Hows it look on my truck?

This exhaust came on my parts truck and im seriously thinking about putting it on my truck. Ive never heard of doug thorley exhaust though. Opinions on look/sound? Anybody have any experience on it? I rough hung this then photochopped it into place. Hows it look? also ive got a stock 305 and im putting on a fresh set of stainless headders with it. Should i have to worry about back pressure with a motor this size having no muffler or anything?

Thanks in advance guys.

I've always understood Doug Thorley to be one of the most expensive header makers, top notch quality. Looks good on there, is it a pair or just the one? If you don't like it wrap it up, put in a box and post to...............

No thats my current project. Parts truck just got sold. Before i got rid of her though i took this exhaust off of it. This is my truck with the exhaust photochopped onto it. Its dual so there will be about 2 foot of pipe between these and the headers. No muffler or glasspacks.

Are you sure that isn't a muffler? Most side pipes are in one way or another.

Old school! Shoot I like it on there. Not too sure about the noise though....Parts truck huh? Hmmmmm Looks nicer than the one I'm kinda restoring.......So when you bring it over to your neighbor in Mn make sure you throw the "parts bike" in the back cuz I'm gonna need that too!!!

DT used to be a top notch maker though I have no recent info...again I vote "back on"

I put Doug Thorley Tri Y headders on my truck and am pretty happy with them, 3/8 flanges and very wrll constructed. The only thing i didn't like about my headders are that the passanger side outlet is angled down a little more than i like so it sticks about 3" past the frame of the truck, then i have to have the pipe bend right back up and over the T-case.

I didn't know they made side pipes and wonder if maybe the owner bought them from JC whitney or something? I have seen them in the cataloge some years back, I'd sure like to hear them. Don't know that i'd sell them ether if i had them, even tho i wouldn't want them on my 4X4

Like mentioned above, DT is known for great quality headers. If the sidepipe kit is in fact DT, it should be top notch too. I'd be willing to bet that if you were to look down inside the pipe there is a muffling baffle of some type built into them. I'd go ahead and run those suckers if I were you.:metal:

While were on the subject too the chrome on the side pipes is kinda rusty. Any body have a real good way of cleaning them up? I used balled up aluminum foil and water and took off almost all of the surface stuff. shined them right up! There are a few spots though that are a little more stubborn. Before I had anything chrome I knew all kinds of at home remedies but now I cant remember any besides the tinfoil.

Brillo / SOS Pads will clean it up, then wax it real good.

I agree with some of the previous posts about mufflers. The side pipes are designed to have slide in glass packs. And i also bet the side pipes aren't made by Doug Thorley, just the headers. I have a set of their tri-y headers on my '69 Camaro. They are top notch, IMHO.

I think the sidepipes look good, but then again I am old school, and they qualify.

Those look nice! I love how raw your motor looks. I went to the Doug Thorley website today and got their email. I sent them pics and asked for any information they have on it. Well see if theyre legit or not.

**update** Ok so I got on the doug thorley website and got their email address. I took some pics and emailed them out asking for any information on them. I got a response 2 days later from head sales guy confirming indeed that they are doug thorley pipes but they haven't made them in so long they can't find any information on them. Either way I made the appointment for friday to get them mounted. Ill post pics when their mounted and ill try to get the sound via youtube video.

Doug Thorley Headers must be one of the oldest header makers around. I first heard about him in 1967 when a guy I worked with factory ordered one of those 1967 Plymouth Belvedere ( like the Sox and Martin car) Hemi race cars with the glass front end and he ordered Doug Thorley Headers for that car.

Thorley headers started out as the Tri-Y configuration and still exists. Two-into-two-into-one....and they are one of the oldest around, maybe into the late-Fities.

I put a set of Thrush side pipes on a '65 SWB C10, but that was in '75 and they weren't new. Bought 'em for $35 from a kid who took 'em off of his Mustang.

You wouldnt happen to have any old pictures of that '65 you could scan so we can see it would you?

** Update 2. I Just got another email from the international sales mgr and he said they stopped production on these pipes in the mid 80's. Starting to sound like I got a he'll of a find!

Re: anybody ever used doug thorley exhaust? Hows it look on my truck?

As it turns out the stainless headers that I ordered do not fit my truck. They are meant for a truck that came with a V8 and mine was originally a 6. So I have a set of headers that might be up for grabs if anybody is interested. Spent 6 hours in the exhaust shop went through 3 sets of headers and a set of manifolds and nothing fit. Running straight headers now...

Still making no headway on the exhaust. I ordered a set of Patriot Hugger headers and those too rub the frame. As of right now I think I might be Grinding down the frame a little to just make what I want to fit.
