350 identification help

Just brought home a ‘66 C10. The owner said it had a 350 installed by previous owner. I wanted to see exactly what we had. Here are the block casting number and suffix code/ partial VIN on front passenger pad.

Block casting # 3970010

Front pass. side pad info:

T0831CKH7
17D410130

I see where other people online have had this same suffix code of “CKH7” but nobody ever comes up with an answer. I see “CKH” listed on many sites but not with a 7 right behind it.

Asking the experts here to chime in and tell me what they can about my engine.

Thanks,
Michael

Re: 350 identification help

I bet someone with knowledge of mid '70's Novas or Monte Carlos would know which model/plant started the sequence numbers with a "D"

Re: 350 identification help

It's got a good casting number (3970010). Same as the LT-1 in the Z-28 and high-perf Corvette, as well as trucks. Some came with 4-bolt mains, some came with 2-bolt mains.

Re: 350 identification help

3970010 is the most mass produce 4" block GM ever made. Not much rarity about that casting number. That number tells you it's a 350 and not a 402, 307, or 305. The suffix code shows it was in A, F, and X body cars. Most with 4bbl carbs. It doesn't guarantee it is a 4 bolt main either.

Does it have a long water pump and the alternator on the passenger side?

Only pic. I have on my phone, alternator on pass. side, not sure on water pump, appears to be the original 4bbl intake with Qjet carb.

Not sure if that air cleaner is original to this engine? It’s been cut out on back side to clear the HEI dizzy. Not sure if the HEI was added and that’s why they cut it out or maybe it’s just not the air cleaner for it? At any rate I’d like some suggestions on another air cleaner. I’d like to make this engine maybe look a bit older. I love the old pie crust air cleaners but doubt they’ll work on the Qjet with HEI. I’d love some script top valve covers even if they were new versions.

Thanks,
Michael

Re: 350 identification help

That air cleaner probably came out of the 1973 or later car that the engine came out of. The HEI was added as well, if the engine is pre 1975ish. Has a long water pump and the bracketry to match with the alternator on the passenger side. You could run a spacer between the air cleaner and the carb to get the air cleaner to clear the HEI. There's a lot of room under that hood.
