My Beater

I've been running around this forum for a couple of years now, scoping out different rides. A couple of weeks ago, I pulled the trigger on a new-to-me squarebody. Overall it's not too bad. Minimal rust, running and driving (more or less). Immediate plans are to figure out an idle issue that cropped up. The issue being that it doesn't want to...I've swapped out the inline fuel filter, that cleared it up some. I still have to two foot it right now. Also there is a brake issue that I have to look into. I doubt that will be major, I just need to find time to pull the wheel.
Longer term plans include replacing the 1985 wood in the bed, and an altitude adjustment. I've ordered a few catalogs, and looked at a bunch of websites, trying to decide how far down I want to go...
Hopefully I can figure out how to upload a couple of pics, (I know, thread is useless w/o pics!!)(Looking at pics is easily half the fun on this site), and you guys tell me what you think !!

Beautiful truck. I'd be tempted to restore that one and run it just like that. Or maybe modern LS power but keep the paint and wheels - just freshened up. Love the flash-back look. Too cool.

I was thinking that too, when I saw it. I got a set of the regular truck rallys when I bought it. I'm thinking of swapping those on. After the idle and brake issues are sorted, I'm losing that back bumper, and the bumper guards on the front. I intend for this to be my DD, so projects are going to be limited to things I can comfortably do on Saturday and Sunday. With proper planning though, that could be significant...
Thanks for all the compliments, can't wait to post more...there's lots of inspiration around here !!

I'm with you...change out that rear bumper and run it as-is. I love the way it looks now. Retro 80s...I can almost hear the Miami Vice soundtrack from here!

I'm kinda leaning toward the 4/6 route. A whole lot or not at all kind of thing.
In the middle of the rear brakes right now. The PO replaced the shoes, and everything is serviceable except for the left drum. It's toast !! Two deep grooves where the rivets rode for a looong time...Well, you can't replace just one drum, and while I'm in there, I might as well replace the shoes and the hardware, and know that it's done...I'll try to throw a pic of the wasted drum up later...One of those things that make you go Hmmmmm....

The "Fall Guy" truck was similar colors.

Thanks, now I have snapping fingers in my head, and Lee Majors singing...
"Well I'm not the kind to kiss and tell..."

Got the brakes swapped on one side, and a shock replaced on the other side yesterday, before I ran out of daylight. Torrential rains all day today...hopefully the weather cooperates tomorrow, and I can wrap up the other side...The best part yesterday was when my son showed interest in helping me out ! I told him that he would be one of the very few kids in his class (9th grade) that not only knew what a drum brake looked like, but could also replace them !!

You know I kinda like the wagon wheels. Especially if you were going for a sort of retro look....still a kool truck.

Yeah, the wagon wheels grew on me pretty quickly. I have a set of the standard truck rallys for just in case, or just because. They came as part of the deal. The only difference I'm mulling over now is maybe a set of Soft 8s in a 17" size to cut the sidewall a bit. But that's only if I drop it down the road a bit...

Been a while, but wanted to throw up a pic of what I did this past Saturday, hopefully it loads...had a few more to show, but can't get them from the phone to the computer for some reason...

I wanted to get the stands, but I didn't realize they were riveted on. I'll probably grab a set from ECE.

rusty76 12-31-2013 05:22 PM

Re: My Beater

I lucked up and found a truck that had the stands bolted on . So I got lucky there. I've removed them before when riveted too. Took me a little while but no big deal. Glad to see you're still working on the old truck.

It's going slower than I planned, but it's going. Work and family stuff are always competing for time. Better to have some money and no time than it is to have time and no money...

Got the front shocks done today...Whose genius idea was it to put the bottom nuts in such a way that you can barely put a wrench on them ?? No pics, but everybody knows what that looks like.
This time, I had my younger daughter offering to bring me tools, so she could hang with Daddy...that was pretty cool !

Good to see you're still working on it. I know you're going to lower it, but I keep diggin on it the way it sits - the raked out stance reminds me of the 454SS trucks.

cable666guy 09-29-2014 08:21 PM

Re: My Beater

I'm thinking when I drop it to try to keep the rake. Nothing against the leveled out trucks, but I dig the rake...
