Operation 1950 Burn Victim
:chevy:
Good day fellow GM guy's. New build thread. My bosses 1950 Chevy. His 1st ever truck. He picked this gem up when he was only 12 years old. Drove it through high school. Some time in 1980 she was the victim of a fire. Hence the title name. After many years of sitting in storage he has given me the opportunity to restore this sweet old beast. 4 very long days and she is all in pieces. Many more pics to come. |

Oldman3 The plan is to bring her back to life in a classic, more safe state. Trying to keep her to the original style my boss had her in while he was growing up; with a few minor changes. Mostly what he "Wanted" to do. 3" Drop axle 5 lug disk brakes. 2nd Gen F-body rear diff. Keeping the inline 6 for nostalgic sake and adding a dual carb intake and Muncie 4 speed. For the pain we are toying with the idea of the finished paint of the interior and frame, as well as the firewall and radiator cover, and leaving the body satin black primer. Wheel and tire combo are still in question. |
Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim
Got the frame all cleaned up and ready for blasting.
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...s72d8e65d.jpeg As soon as the blasting is done and we make a final decision on the suspension then off to be powder coated. |
Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim
I modified the steering column a bit to add a little more room.

Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim
Not really sure why this bracket was welded here, but it has been here for over 40 years.
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psv3y5nsa6.jpg So much for that. Plasma cutter to the rescue!! http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0axpl55i.jpg |
Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim
Just picked her up from the Media blaster
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6msh93lg.jpg A little bit of work to do back here http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psder7691n.jpg http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...ps750smwss.jpg http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psa3rf5bvi.jpg http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psjv0bu8cu.jpg http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...ps91twajz1.jpg Left rear corner panel and the right front lower cowl panel will be replaced. Debating on the right side foot area. POR15 and some DynaMat should do the trick. |
Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim

Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim
Christmas is coming early.
Among all the little things that I have ordered from Brothers Trucks, (which is an amazing company to work with) from TCI Engineering I ordered their 1950 Chevy Truck Rear Parabolic Leaf Spring Suspension Kit - Part number: 432-4610-00 She is gonna look so so sweet sitting in the back. http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...sbd8fc947.jpeg We will have it powder coated Red along with the frame. http://www.classictrucks.com/tech/09...g_kit_upgrade/ Here is the side view from Classic Trucks website. http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psd2b4e2f5.png |
Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim
I also got that rear leaf set.. Easy to instal, and good strong material.
And the stance is great. Good luck with your build.. |
Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim
I just put the same thing in my 1950 a few weeks ago. I liked it a lot.

Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim
I'm trying to post new pics but that blasted Photobucket is down.
I ordered the front end kit with Drop Axle and brakes and heavy duty Tie Rod with ends. Rear roll pan so I can trim out the back. I will be installing a rear access fuel filler from the licenses plate door next. Picking up the frame from the Blaster shop tomorrow. Next step will be to cut off all the old spring shackle brackets and prep it for the "NEW" goodies. Stay Tuned |
Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim
Ahh YEAH!! New Pics!!!
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psd84f5226.png http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7dadde36.png After we get all this goodness mocked up with the engine, (6 Cyl) new Tranny, (Muncie 4speed) and the 10 Bolt 2nd gen F-body Diff it is time to Powder coat this beauty. Frame will be done in Victory Red. Yes, 2008 Corvette Red. |
Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim
Just picked up all the goodies from our Blaster guru. The frame was a Bugga to get cleaned  Sure looks good tho.

Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim
Reluctantly waiting on Back ordered parts. As it turns out the front drop axle is made out of 100% pure Unobtainium. This is also true for the radiator support. I am not really happy with the place I ordered these parts from but what am I supposed to do?
So on to the things that I can control. Pictures!!!! The rear diff is in http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...s23gilk4b.jpeg http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...sasumdg63.jpeg http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...stel9wixy.jpeg Built a sweet rotisserie http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...pseljt7ckq.jpg Picked up little peach to mount up the T5 BW tranny. http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2ofhanxs.jpg And on to the doors. One has some bondo in it from a little wack, but that aint no big deal. http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psho7jylcz.jpg http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psh3oton0y.jpg http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psla5rq0s0.jpg http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psxijfi7tf.jpg http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psz8hvqye4.jpg http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...pspcrcnia8.jpg http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4p0zzrik.jpg All theses goodies as well as the fenders and bed are going to the media blaster this week. Then off to the pain guy. In the mean time the frame will be mocked up with the engine and tranny then sent out to the drivetrain guy to build a drive line and rebuild the Diff with some 3.55:1 gears. |
Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim
Moving along nicely!

Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim
Cancel your orders, there's plenty of vendors for these trucks. Cpp? I'd go with a SIDS axle ,drop axle . And he'll get it to you and it'll be perfect
|
Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim
Love your progress!

Hopped Up, Really? SIDS? I will check them out. CPP has not been the best to work with so far, so it won't kill me to cancel that. Thank you for the advice, I will use it. |
