Missed a bunch of updates!

Looking good!

Even though they're meaningless, I geeked out over all the paint marks and stampings I found on my 65 Mustang too. I found A LOT of them. Unfortunately, I did paint over pretty much all of them, rust free is more important to me than a paint mark. I did take pics of everything I found though :)

My C10 was such a spray painted up mixed bag of parts when I got it 22 years ago, I found jack squat of anything "original" EXCEPT for the model number in chalk in huge numbers on the rear frame cross member. It was almost 10+ years before I even knew it was there!

thanks 67....all I'm getting done right now is bodywork and sanding, sanding, and more sanding....there were still grease pencil assembly marks on a couple places on the truck that I found

Mongo - have you run across this guy while looking for parts: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Coonr...59964014102231

He’s about an hour away from me here in Colorado. My friend and I went to Fairplay, CO one day last month to look at a truck and spotted this place on our way. We stopped and walked thru the yard and there are tons of parts, semi trailers squirreled away that are packed, and everywhere you look there more piles and sheds. Almost made me want an IH! Might be worth checking if you need any parts.

well, I spent this afternoon working on fabbing my cab corner patch...I was really dreading this because of all the different radiuses, bends and curves..it turned out better than I thought it would and although its not a perfect match I think itll be ok...got it ready to weld in,sprayed down the backside with weld thru primer...I also sandblasted the cavity behind the patch and sprayed it good with primer as well...ive got a can of rust encapsulater im gonna spray in there before I weld it up...

Nice job on that corner! Lotta complex shape in that one for sure.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

thanks Doug...hopefully when I get this welded in thatll be the last of the body welding ive got on this truck...I do have a few firewall holes to weld up and two on the dash...but that's all I know of right now....

got my "new to the old truck" cab corner welded in today....it sunk in a little from welding but it couldn't be avoided cause I can't get to the back side...has one or two little high spots but I'm not doing anymore to it til i get it sandblasted and then see what I got....I think a little filler will hide it pretty good.....

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

rant for today......I'm pissed
well....I got some unsettling news today.....most all the work I've done so far is for naught....I had finished up most of my bodywork after sandblasting and epoxy primer so today since we had some good weather with no rain I thought I'd go ahead and spray the highbuild primer...so off to the parts store I went...without a (real) auto paint store nearby that's about all we got. ...told the counter guy I needed a gal of high build primer...off to the back he goes and comes back and sets it on the counter....I look at it and its the same primer I've been spraying ...I tell him no I wanted high build...he says that is high build...I look at him funny and said it better not be..well it is..so i told him when I bought that primer I told them I wanted epoxy primer for dtm...and that primer is what they gave me...I argued with them then that it didn't say epoxy on it...we went round and round about it...they convinced me that's what I needed...remember ,, I'm not a painter and am fairly new to all this proper way of painting...so on this truck I was trying to do everything right...well now I've got sandblasted metal with highbuild primer directly on bare metal......
so by now im getting mad...the counter guy calls a body shop guy he knows and I talked to him...he says the paint will never stick..in about 3 yrs he says it'll start falling off...only thing I can do is go back to bare metal...argghhhhhh!!!!....there's 4 months and over $1k throwed up a wild hogs butt....needless to say I'm pissed...all the bodywork that was done , the lizardskin I sprayed,.primer ...everything....has come off..............did I mention I'm pissed?........I left the store VERY unhappy...they did say they'd cut me a break on my future supplies....lot of good that does now.....so yeah...its been a bad day....rant over...

Holy crap! You sir are a saint imo, I would have wrapped my xxl hands around someone’s neck and squeezed until I could squeeze no more!

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Sorry to hear that Greg. I don’t know paint, so I am guessing there is no alternative to stripping it off and starting over?

mongocanfly 03-15-2018 09:50 PM

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

I felt that way clyde....and my hands are XXXXXL ..(yeah ive got huge hands..i know) good thing I had a good upbringing...I've got to remember this whole project is for my parents..was trying to make they're anniversary this year but there's no way I can make that date now....

yeah Doug. ..although I've painted stuff before I dont know paint either... (obviously)...according to the bodyshop guy that's all I can do...go back to bare metal...or watch paint start falling off in 3yrs or so

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Sorry to hear. I've been following this build, and you're doing good work. Unfortunately, IMO, paint is one of those things you shouldn't buy from an auto parts store. Secondly, you can't take their word for the products you use. You also need to read the tech sheets (P-sheets) and follow them exactly. The P sheets would tell you whether it can be applied DTM or not. In auto paint, always read the instructions, if they don't supply tech sheets, it's probably not a product you want to use.. A great source for mail order epoxy, Southern Polyeurethanes (SPI). Best price, service, and support. Be warned, the key to successful epoxy is clean metal, and no rust converters or acids.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

thanks BIG....I should have known better...I knew it didn't say anything about epoxy on the can and that's what I argued with them about from the start...but the guy I was dealing with has worked in the parts store for over 35yrs so I figured he knew more than I did....as far as directions go I do read those and follow them to a t....I've painted stuff before but I've never taken one to bare metal and I've never used epoxy or high build primer before or I might have known something wasn't right......live and learn I guess....1 step forward and 10 steps back...
but there wernt any tech sheets....
the body shop guy said the same thing....that's what you get for buying paint at a parts store...

Mongo

That stinks at so many levels, and what's worse those dudes at the parts store won't lose any sleep over this. Very few folks own the fact that they did not do you right.

You have the right to get bent, I feel your pain. I to have had similar experiences so dude, put up a sheet of old used OSB board, paint a target on it, buy a dozen eggs........

Great what you're doing for your dad.

Strong work

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Such a bummer! You’re doing some really nice work and a setback like this is so aggravating. Sadly, very few of the guys in the local parts stores know what they are talking about. Worse, they feel the need to make up answers and seem to think it doesn’t matter if they’re close. They will happily sell you the wrong parts or supplies time after time and as inept as many are with auto parts I can only imagine they are far worse with paint.

I think you said there is no auto body paint supplier near you? How about a friendly auto body repair shop? They might be willing to get you some materials? I used to get some materials from a local auto body repair guy in my town which was pretty small at that time. Now the town grew up and he sold out and I make the hour and an half round trip to the nearest paint supply shop. They’re a pleasure to deal with because they know what they’re talking about.

Deep breaths, a few calming thoughts (like kicking that sales guys ass...) and you’ll get the truck looking even better! At least you didn’t have color on it!

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

thanks Scott. ...I went today and talked to a guy that recommended that I go to the sherwin williams auto paint store....its about a hour and a half away....there's also a ppg close to them so I'm gonna talk to both....I hadnt thought about going thru a body shop to get supplies...that's a good idea.. ill check into that as well...
