69' 250 stalling in higher gears...abruptly.

Good evening gentlemen. I am new to the forum, though have long lurked and gleaned much valuable info from you all. Thank you.

So...I've been wailing away on my 69 for a few months now...recently got it started and am experiencing an abrupt die out after short distances of driving...most regularly when I hit fourth gear.

It is a 250/1bl rochester/ sm465/ 307s

Carb is clean and squirts when it's supposed to...so accelerator pump looks outwardly ok...plenty of fuel to the pump...fresh fuel...does have an inline filter at the carb inlet...new. Starts on the second rev. Idles well.

Any insight from your experience is appreciated.

Thanks
Travis

You could be having the rubber fuel hose collapse starving it of gas. It could idle fine and run good up to a heavy load situation. It could also be the sock in the fuel tank stopping up. And lastly loosen the gas cap and see if it still happens. It may just need a vented cap.

Definitely sounds like being starved for Gas, just need to figure out why. If its a 250 then I assume you have the Monojet carb which has a small fuel filter behind the nut were the gas line attaches, could be clogged.

Check everything Boog mentioned, probably one of those, but I had a 283 one time that had a weak fuel pump, would pump only enough to run until it hit about 40 mph, when cold it couldn't keep up and would stall when it ran dry in the fuel bowl, but would start right right back up and run good until you were up to speed again. When it warmed it, then ran fine to any (reasonable) speed. That was a freak pump failure, took months to find, doubt that is, but its something in the gas supply. -- Ken

Thanks fellas-

I did the rubber segments of fuel line and kept them as short as possible....blew the steel with compressor and carb cleaner....tried the fuel cap to no great effect. I think the fuel pump is my offender....I have one so fingers crossed....Ill check that bowl filter out as well.

Ken- the symptoms described in your 283 are very similar to mine.

Thanks again

Might try a carb rebuild so you can check the float level as well.

I had a similar issue. I rebuilt the carb and that helped a lot but still had an issue every now and then. I changed the mechanical fuel pump out with a new one and bingo the issue went away. So mine was a combination of the 2. A carb kit is really simple to do and costs about $20 bucks.

Well fellas...swapped a fuel pump...chucked that nasty bowl filter in the mono jet...and I was doing 60 down a county road with no hood....ran like a raped date.

While I have attention...here's another fun one...when I press the brakes...my dash lights come on...

Thanks again

Sounds like a grounding issue. Check all you grounds out and make sure the are good.
