I would call that a Texas Hauler.

Was that Futureliner built as a tractor, or has it been modified?

It is a Futurliner that was modified to a hauler. Mecum had it for auction last month at Monterey. It didn't sell.

prolly would make a nice RV as whell if you put the body on a bus chassis
had seen a big website on the last futureliner that was restored , seems there still a few around but not in a restorable condition

Looks like that Futureliner may be on a different chassis. Should have dual wheels in front and the rear axle looks to be too far farward. Too bad it got cut up but then again maybe the mid section was unsavable.

From the Mecum description:

This is Futurliner No. 5, which was converted to be a vehicle carrier and is the only example of the nine remaining to have been restored for such duty. The original engine was replaced with a more potent NTC 855/230 HP Cummins diesel with an Allison 600-series 6-speed transmission. Painted in proper GM Futurliner Parade of Progress colors, this vehicle carrier features a 29-foot bed with rear clamshell access doors, wooden load floors and hidden folding hydraulic ramps. The original cab has been modified as a tilting cab. Modern 20,000-lb air-sprung front and rear axles support the vehicle. Featuring a train horn, 240-volt flood lights, a 12,500 Watt Onan generator, a 200 gallon fuel capacity and air conditioning it would be difficult to find a more unique way to take a car to a car show.

Probably not competitive enough. Cheaper to sell tooling to a company or split of to another branch

Stupidity, in my opinion.

I would say there was probably some dealer support issues and possibly some labor issues such as those that shut down Brockway. That being said remember White/GMC, Volvo/White. Seems like it got phased out rather than just stopped.

Sheet Metal looks good on it.

Is the truck in Alaska?

Re: GM Semis

Yeah the truck is here in town near my home in Alaska. Oddly placed Detroit diesel badges ... Lower Rear corner of the doors.....Makes me wonder if it is a " fuel pincher"

This looks to be a Volvo tagged as a Chevrolet in South America.

They were not making enough money on them. 1987 was the last year, except the Brigadier continued for a couple of years as a 'WhiteGMC'.

I would have liked to see them restructure and re-promote them instead of just selling out. But that's just my opinion from the back seat, lol.

It didn't help GM having the 2-stroke Detroits outlawed. Figure GM was making money off of other brands using their engines as well as their trucks. Not so long ago they let Allison go, too. It's all about counting beans I guess. Basically GMC folded into White and White into Volvo and now it's Macks into Volvos. So far just engines, but who knows what's next? If anything, I'd rather see the Volvo name dropped and carry on as Macks...just because. It would somehow soften the fact that America is being eaten up by foreign money.

Haven't shown pictures in a long time because I lost track of what I showed, others showed, and this thread is so big I haven't had the time to look back.

Repeat? I dunno...screw it! Cool picture

Love that photo! Wonder what the weight is on that log, is it a log?, Let's say unbuilt house.
I wish the Mack name would return to its own, I always say I'm gonna do the Mack factory tour when I go to Macungie, still haven't thought.
