A work in progress. So far I've added power brakes, replaced hood hinges and added a 700R4 tranny. Yet to do: Air conditioning, front disc brakes, rebuild doors, sound system, some decent mirrors. That'll keep me and my check book busy for a while!

My dad's was a blue '69. I wanted a good old truck like his. Had no idea the 67-72 vintage was becoming such a collectable!

700r4

Hi Zonaman. You have great looking truck with lots of potential to take it any way you want to go. How hard was it to hook up the 700R4 to your engine and did you have to change driveshafts or do any mods to the truck? What is your rearend ratio and how much did your fuel economy improve?

It wasn't hard at all, just expensive! A transmisson conversion was a bit beyond my current skill level. I didn't have the tools for it either. I had the work done by a trusted professional here in Phoenix. There's a bunch of guys on this list who can do the job though. Look at this post if you haven't already.

I can tell you this: the drive shaft needed to be shortened by about 3 inches, the splines needed replacing, a new crossmember has to be added (either welded or some tricky drill work), there's a vaccum line to add, and elelctric component, and a speedo cable. I believe I have a 4:11 posi. The mileage before the conversion was 10-12 mpg now it's 12-14. (I haven't messed with timing and carb yet.) It's a great tranny, quiet & smooth, and yes, better mpg.

Hope that helps.
