Repo Tailgate

I have the chance to buy a new reproduction tailgate locally. The guy only wants $50.00. I know that is a good price but how do the reproduction tailgates compare to the nos units?
Thanks

Do you mind me asking what you paid for it.

Most are NOT worth the tin there made from, I sat an EMPTY Big Block on one and it Bent. I threw it away and ended up buying a whole parts truck just for a good origianl gate. Just my 2c

I had a friend that sat on a repro tailgate that was down...it bowed it. He only weighs 195lbs! Get a nice original one if you can.

I Loaded a lawnmower at Sears, imagine my surprise when the tailgate no longer shut! Bent right past the supports. I'll never buy a China gate again. Brian

i have one and havent had any bending problems, but its about 1/4 inch too short and had to shim the bottom hindges to keep it from falling off of one side

"Tri Plus" Gates Only . They are Oky but Try and find a NOS gate. The no name gates are totally juck dont waste your money on it. There is a reasoon why he only wants 50 dollars for it.

Good Luck.

I am happy with my reproduction smooth tailgate- got it from Frank (Pickmup)- it seems to be strong- I only weigh about 125lbs, but it sure doesn't bend or bow when I sit on it. I am happy with the results, and it fit right in! Guess you never know...here is a pic

I have a Tri Plus smooth tailgate I bought from Rick's Pickup Parts and it is fine. I weigh 240 and sitting on it doesn't phase it at all. It's the same weight and gauge as the original. There are two problems with mine. First, the spot welds on the face of the tailgate at each end are very obvious but they are very easy to fill. Second, the ridge near the top that matches the body line on the ends of the bed protrudes slightly more than it should. I don't see this a big problem given that the original tailgate didn't match perfectly either. Cost: $150 + shipping.
