Good glass-Bad glass ??

I have a couple of resto catalogues. In my search for a windshield('63 tinted greenish w/blue across top) I have noticed HUGE price differences $350.00 at Truck Shop and $1300.00 at Classic Industries mind you TS's is "tinted" and CI's is "shaded" !! My question is , What is the difference between these two products? and Is there a quality issue, as the pricing may suggest? (you know that "get what you pay for" adage) . Any input on this would be greatly appreciated PS This is the 2nd one since resto, both cracked upon installation
Thanx T

I may have this bassackwards, but I believe the "tinted" has a fade at the top with the rest clear and the "shaded" is slightly green uniformly. A third version is just 100% clear.

I too have been looking at windshield prices for the 1960-'63 trucks.
I found the windshields ranging from $350 all the way up to $1700.  The only 2 types of glass I have found is either clear or tinted (green glass) that was a factory upgrade.

I'm going with the green tinted glass, the back is green tinted, and I have the new ones for the doors. I did find a local glass shop that can install the windshield, with new gasket installed for $350, if they bust it during installation, they'll replace it free. Both types of windshields are the same price. :)

Are you going to install the trim around the windshield, or without? If you're going to install the trim, it will be alot more trickier(sp) to install.

Not going with the trim so hopefully it works out ,but I still can't figure out the price difference ,I mean that's alot of coin !!!?
Thanx for the response T

I recently had new glass put in my 63 for $280 installed. And I did make them put the trim back in. They cussed a bit, but got it done. Mine was the clear version.

most glass shops around where i live will sell you one a tinted on for 200 to 240 dollars. I use Binswanger. Their in many states. They didn't even have to order it.
They only pay around 80 to 90 dollars for these ,some of the workers have told me.The biggest problem is getting a quality gasket that fits. Some make it next to impossilble to get the glass in. I used to put my own in but its easier(and cheaper HA)
if a pro does it. I bought one once from a shop called "out back truck parts for $200 (2003)and it was actually made in america) most it seems most are made in mexico.
dont' pay anywhere near $1300
One of the differences in glass is that replacement glass most times are not the quality of factory. Even on 2000 up vehicles. they work fine. sometimes may have a little tiny wave in the corner but still good. maybe slightly thinner but when you get 4- 5 chips a year in them why buy high dollar. If your doing a 100% concourse condition restoration you need the original glass.

YAY finally got my avatar to go in!! Thanks guys for Your thoughts on this, I think I'll probably go with a better rubber, that might be why we've gone through two and not even turned a wheel, as long as I can find one that's "greenish" (to match the rest of the glass) I can live without the blue across the top ( my current cracked one has both)
Now all this leads to my next inquiery(sp.) Is there gaskets NOT to buy or ???

mbgmike 08-25-2005 10:25 PM

I cant name the bad ones but i would buy from PRECISION REPLACEMENT PARTS their number is 1- 800-367-8241. they are the only gasket i use now. they are made in taiwan but they fit
mikes bump and grind
YEAH BUDDIE THEY WORK
