HEI Internal Coil
I have an HEI with the external coil on it. I think the coil is distracting and ugly. How much trouble and expense is it to go to an internal coil?
This is on a '66 Chevy 250. I could have used a Pertronix and made it look factory. Almost wished I had, but don't want to throw the money away that I spent on the HEI. |
Re: HEI Internal Coil
Sixpac, I have an internal HEI dist that I built for my 194 six cylinder, but I can't remember exactly what I used. It's been a few years ago. I know the dist itself was an external coil unit from an integrated head 250, and I'm pretty sure I used a cap, coil and rotor from like a 1980'ish 229 V6. The part I can't remember is the wire harness for the pickup coil and module. I don't remember if the external coil harness worked with the internal coil cap, but I think it did. But even if it does not work, I think the internal harness is the same one they used on all the V8's, so they should be very easy to find. Hope that helps.

Re: HEI Internal Coil
Cheapest way is to go to the salvage yard and get the dizzy with the internal coil. Around here they run from $20 to $65, depends on the yard. If the body size is the same, I think you can use an internal coil cap on yours. There were two different sizes, some of the external coil bodies were smaller and took a different cap.
