72 2wd blazer build
 

This is my thread to cover the build of my 72 2wd blazer. I purchased this Blazer from a board member in the Dallas area early this year. It was in a general state of disrepair. It hadn't been driven in some time. The interior was non-existent, and what was there was not correct for the truck.
I was happy to get it none the less.

I got it roadworthy and started driving in a little. I put on a new set of tires and did some minor mechanical repair. Then I decided it was time for an altitude adjustment. I got some 3" drop spindles and cut a coil off the front springs. The guy that I bought the blazer from gave me some drop springs for the rear so I put those in also.

Of course after I got it lowered I had to get some bling on there. I got a good deal on some 20" Coys Rodders and Falken tires. The fit is not perfect, but the looked better than the rally wheels that were on it before.

I also added a flushmount fuel filler door because I cant stand the look of the gas cap on the quarter panel.

The truck was originally a low option 6cyl/3 spd truck. Somewhere along the line it had been converted to a 350/4spd. The 350 runs good, but the Saginaw 4spd is a little noisy. I guess that doesnt matter though since it is now sitting in the shop floor. This is what she looked liek under the hood when I got it.

Soon after i got to this point I decided to tear it down to fix the rockers and patch a couple of places in the floor. Well this got a little out of hand and the body is now on the rotisserie. I have sandblasted the whole underside of the tub. I also sandblasted the windshield frame and dash for good measure. I put some epoxy primer on it today. I will get some pics of this up soon.

Well the poor old frame was needing some attention. I used about 6 cans of over cleaner and several hours with the pressure washer to get it this clean. Sandblasting will clean it up nicely though.

too much backspacing on the rear. they are too far up under the fender for me. It fits perfect on the front though.

I used these on the back of my Blazer. I had the same problem. I used the 1.5" version. VERY well made. Would be cheaper than a new set of wheels and just as safe. Later, mark

Glad to see you step off the deep end :lol: Once you get the tub back on the chassis, the hard part (mental) is over. ;)

I'm running those on my 67 swb also. Got from same guy. Very good quality and fitment. I haven't had a single problem in 2,000 miles that they've been on. I got the 1-1/2" spacers on 20x8.5" wheels w/ 5.25" BS.

I really wanted to get the stance right on this one. Its pretty easy to get the front down low, but the back is always a pain. I knew a bolt in notch or a regular "c notch" wasnt going to cut it. I bought an 8pc step notch kit and proceded to bend and cut it to fit the contours of the rear frame. I know some of you "original" guys are probably gonna throw rocks at me......but I did cut a big hunk out of a factory 2wd frame.

Once I got the notch in I ran into another problem.......trailing arms hitting the frame. Luckily I had 10ft of 2x3 1/4" wall tubing, so I made some new trailing arms. This still did not completely fix the situation in the rear. I didnt want to mount the bags over or in front of the axle because I have dreams of having some sort of exhaust system in that area. so I decided to notch the trailing arms for the bag mounts. this gave me the clearance I needed and let me mount the bag approximately in the stock spring location.

This leaves me with the frame sitting level at 2.5" off the ground. I really want it a tad lower in the front so.........now I have to decide if I want to section the crossmember, or Z the frame, or leave it alone.

Wow, that is gonna be one sick little Blazer once it's done. I've had 3 Blazers but all 4X4's, always a soft spot in my heart for those 2wd Blazers. Keep on posting pics, no matter how insignificant you may think they are :c2:

Wish I had the funds and the lower back (blown L5/S1) to do my 69 that way...Little bit at a time I guess. :cool:

I turned the frame upside down tonight and finished the welding. I also made some exhaust passages in the trailing arm crossmember. Tomorrow I will start painting some stuff. And I promise to take some new pics.:cool:

No problem, also how did you clean up the bottom side of the Blazer, sand blast or just sanded everything?

sand blasting is the only way to go. I did the whole bottom side in about 1.5 hrs.

Progress has been slow. Between work, trying to spend a little time with the family and the dang HOT weather I havent gotten much done lately. I have everything painted and the front suspension put back together. I found some carnage inside the rearend so now that is setting me back a little.

What's the reason for the 'notch' where the rear-end would be positioned?
