700r4 np208 combo into 69
 

Hello. I'am rebuilding a 69 shortie and was wondering if anyone has put a 700r4np208 combo into this year truck. I've got everything from the donor truck.If anyone knows of any problems in doing this it would be gretly appreciated.

if you plan on using it as a 4x4, go with a th400/np205. If you are just building a 4x4, and may or may not use th 4 wheel, and wont abuse it, go with what you have. The bonus of the overdrive is worth it alone, and you get a lower first gear. Don't let people scare you away from the 700, the early ones had problems, but when updated with later model parts, they are great. The 208 uses a different front driveline than the early stuff, and I am guessing you got it out of a IFS truck, so you will need to find one. Also, it uses a slip yoke rear shaft, but you may be able to use the yoke on your drive shaft, and just shorten it a little.

I got the trans/case from an 85 1/2ton so it has u-joints on the front and a slip yoke on the rear. The truck is not going to be used off-road so a turbo400/205 would be overkill.

I just got done putting a 700/208 into my 3/4 ton and plan on using the 4X4 as much as the average guy. You will hear that the 208 is not as strong because it is aluminum and chain driven, but 99% of the people running a 208 will never push it to the limit anyway. It also saves you the extra $$ for the 205 adapter.

My donor was an '84 Blazer. I located the transfer case in the same location as the 205, so the front ds from the Blazer bolted right up. I got a rear ds out of an '86 suburban, and it too dropped right in.

The engine will need to be moved 3" forward - I unbolted the engine cradle and drilled new holes in the frame to accomodate this. An added bonus for access to the distributor!
