4.3 making noises
I have a 99 Jimmy with a 4.3l in it. When the motor is cold and I start it there is a ticking noise. It stops after about a minute, and is not there at all when I start the motor after it is already warmed up. The truck has 260,000km on it. I'm planning on keeping it for a while longer as it is in really good shape overall. Anybody have an idea what this could be and if it is fixable?

Re: 4.3 making noises
Its sounds like to me just a lifter taking its time pumping up after it sat. You can fix it but it will involve a good teardown on the motor. Try adding some oil treatment such as STP to your oil and see if that helps.Or change it with the high mileage oil. With that many miles on the motor, its aloud to make some noises. :) I wouldn't worry about it. But thats just me.

Re: 4.3 making noises
I'm thinking more along the lines of wrist pin or piston slap. drive it.
BTW, if it does end up having a scrap iron fit I just happen to have a spare 80K mile one sitting in the shop. |
Re: 4.3 making noises
Or put an LS1/6 speed in it. Thats what I'll do if mine ever has a scrap iron fit.
