Hard Water Spots
 

Oh boy. Am I having a hard time.

I have a 69 chevy pickup, and the windows I think are original. They arent crusty looking or anything, they just look like they have some age.

Well, the 2 door windows, half the windshield and half of the rear window are COVERED in water spots. Oh have I heard of thousands of Ideas to get them off...BUT nothing is working.

Ive tried newspaper, vinegar, newspaper with vinegar, a straight edge razor blade with vinegar and a newspaper, Glass Scrub, Wax, All sorts of window cleaner, Even KETCHUP!

and no, I dont want to replace the glass because I have a strong belief that if its not broke dont fix it :D

I want to get my windows tinted before the arizona heat sets in, but I want to get these bothersome water spots off. Plus, it would be nice to be able to see clearly out of my windows anyways

A couple of times. Seems to work great. It might depend on the type of hard water that caused the stains in the first place, I suppose.

I also used in on the shower door in my old apt. bathroom before I moved out. Worked good there too!

Vinegar and water mix will get rid of water spots. Use it in a spray bottle. I'm about to do this on my room mates black Cobalt SS once the weather gets better.

I tried that a while back. then my hubby stated that he even tried acetone on the windows and the water spots didn't even budge.

Its what years of 120 degrees of evil ball of fire in the sky will do when you don't attend to water spots when they happen in Phoenix. In Phoenix, you can wash the car the day before and the smear marks from wiping it down will even be hard to get off. Its Crazy.

I know those water spots have been on there for a good while, so I'm willing to use anything.

As a matter of fact, After talking about it earlier I called around to try and find the Meguiars product that was suggested and wouldn't you know it? NO ONE carries it. Not even the local hardware store..

So my roommate suggested Dawn dish washing soap and an SOS pad. it got all the grime off of the windows and the recent water spots but not the ones that have been there since god knows when.

So I sat down in front of the computer to do a little more research. Apparently out of the 10 to 12 websites I went to everyone was saying chrome polish.

I didnt think at this point it would hurt to try anything else so I went down to CSK and bought a 3pk of terry towels and a bottle of Turtle Wax Chrome Polish/ Rust Remover. 6 dollar investment.

After a whole lot of rubbin and some serious hand cramps from scrubbing it so hard, the glass looks like brand new and the water spots are non-existant.

Bad part is, if you seriously are thinking about using the chrome polish, invest in a small buffer..I still cant feel my hands. :lol:

So thanks for pointing me in the right direction guys, I figured since the Meguiars Medium-Cut is somewhat abrasive, I thought that maybe the Chrome Polish would be somewhat abrasive too.

to help keep the hard water spots to a min. wash in the cool of the day out of the wind and sun. wash at a car wash thats got a good spot free rinse.

I learned the same thing but as a bonus to some body work I had done to my 6 yo car.
After repairing the side of the car, my body guy said the rest of the car (and glass) looked like crap
so he buffed out everything. I had been at the glass with vinegar, paint thinner, lacquer thinner,
razors, SOS pads...the water spots were still so bad they looked like overspray!

Sure am glad to know there is a solution to the problem :metal:

In the article above it mentioned that the Meguiar's compound may have put scratches into the glass.... does anyone know if that is true? I need to clean my windows in my '69 due to hard water, but I have original tinted glass and don't want to affect the window.

As with everything, it is smart to try just a small area to see if whatever you are using will effect the surface. Find some shade and take your time.

All else fails, buff the spots off with a rubbing compound, Like 3M's Finnessee-It.

Ok here goes but you must use the product BY NAME

bartenders friend or Bonami....these are made with EGG shells wet the windows down and sprinkle some on and wash with a sponge scrubbing as much as you want...IT WILL NOT HURT GLASS,SS, OR CHROME trust me

we use a glass polish at work with FINE grade steel wool gets it off every time

truth is alot of car dealers use it along with auto bodyshops...and the product has been around a long time..and used for just this type of work it just seems to have not made it's mark with car guys

I have been using Bar keepers friend for years for attacking rust on chrome but it didn't phase my water spots.

IMHO, severe water spots are a form of chemical etching and I think that Bar Keepers Friend might have the capacity to aggravate the condition. Physically buffing below the damage may be the only solution.

Bar Keepers Friend is a great product for other things around the shop and can be often found in your local grocery store for about $3 per can.

UltraBlue... where do you acquire 000 steel wool? I checked some of the local auto parts store and they were either out or didn't have any.
