How much to cut cups?

My truck is an 86 and I have the S.D. cups. I've searched and see varying opinions on cup heights between 1-1.5". I'm running a sway bar too. Just wanna run some schrader valves to keep it simple. Thanx:fb:

Re: How much to cut cups?

My understanding is that you can go to 1.5" on 67-72 arms and down to 0.75" on 73-87 arms. I have no exp with the 73-87 arms though. 1.5" cups are perfect for my '72 arms.

I don't know the correct answer, but I am curious why you are cutting them?

Probably to get a bit lower when aired out.

Yep, 1" at the bag/cup or spring equates to about 2" in drop.

Re: How much to cut cups?

is this true for the 67-72 trucks too?

Re: How much to cut cups?

I "understand" that cutting the cups allows you to go lower. Does it allow you to run more air at a lower ride height?

On my 82 Blazer with 3" spindles and standard cups, the limiting factor was the A-arms hitting the ground.

Ok, school me on this guys.

Re: How much to cut cups?

The cups S.D. sent are 2.5 inches high..... I had a feeling that was too much. I have a 2.5" drop spring in there right now and it's to harsh. I like the stance but was hoping for an improved ride. I'm still not clear on what the ideal cup height should be. If I can't get a solid answer, I'll probably try 1.25 and go from there.

Re: How much to cut cups?

If I understand correctly, The shorter the cups, The more air you can run in the bags, The better the ride........???? Correct......????

Re: How much to cut cups?

so you cut it down to 1.25 and you can lay control arm?

no thats not it the less air you run the softer the ride, just has to do with how low it will go when aired out...:metal:

Actually there is a range in which a bag will give the best ride. Pressure/bag-height too low=crappy ride & pressure/bag-height too high=crappy ride. Other factors like selecting the right bag for the application also come into play. In general, with the right bag for the application shorter cups allows you to ride lower and still be in the "sweet spot." ...and obviously air out lower.

Re: How much to cut cups?

Thanks for schooling me mike...LOL. does the sweet spot depend on the bag or is there a pressure we should be shooting for? I have 2600 dominators.

Every bag has an optimal operating range or "design height," as Air Lift calls it, that is the about mid height +/- X". The 2600's range is 2.8"-12.5" but the design height is 6'-9".

Linkage here

Yes. 1.5" total cup height works well for 67-72 arms.

Re: How much to cut cups?

I've read guys say they can cut more off the cups when using 73-87 arms. Maybe someone can confirm to clear this up once and for all...
